The Book of Proverbs -Proverbs 19 - February 19, 2026

I have long believed that there are two types of Bible readers:  Psalms people and Proverbs people.  Perhaps it has to do with how our brains are wired, are we right-brained or left-brained?  

Thank you, Lord, for including both books in your word so that all the different types of Bible readers can not only find a place where they feel comfortable, but also be challenged to learn more about how to read your word, because we know that every book in it is equally important! 

If you couldn’t tell, I’m a proverbs person.  I took a full year of poetry in college and even had a few of my own poems published in magazines as a teenager, but poetry is just not the native language of my brain.  On the other hand, when I feel confused, unmotivated, hurt, or even lazy, I know I can open the proverbs and find a verse that will help me process my emotions and work through my problem. This brings me to the verse I have chosen to focus on today:

Proverbs 19:27 says,“Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.”  

I love to learn, and my father taught me from a young age that any day that passes by without learning at least one new thing is wasted.  As a child, I understood that I needed to learn, but I assumed that once I was an adult, I would know everything and be done, right?  I have young kids who love to listen to Disney music, and one of our favorites is from Frozen 2.  The showman character sings a blissfully naive song about how, when we are older, “absolutely everything makes sense”.   Sometimes we lose the child-like joy and wonder of learning, but God has blessed us with an infinite amount of wisdom in the Bible, and there is an opportunity to learn something new every time we open it!  So, whether you are 8 or 80, let’s not waste our days and open our Bibles for the daily bread God has offered us.

Siempre he creído que hay dos tipos de lectores de la Biblia: los que prefieren los Salmos y los que prefieren los Proverbios. Quizás tenga que ver con cómo está conectado nuestro cerebro, ¿somos más de hemisferio derecho o de hemisferio izquierdo?

Gracias, Señor, por incluir ambos libros en tu palabra, de modo que todos los diferentes tipos de lectores de la Biblia no solo puedan encontrar un lugar donde se sientan cómodos, sino que también se sientan desafiados a aprender más sobre cómo leer tu palabra, ¡porque sabemos que todos los libros que la componen son igualmente importantes!

Por si no lo habéis notado, soy una persona de proverbios.  Estudié poesía durante todo un año en la universidad e incluso publiqué algunos de mis propios poemas en revistas cuando era adolescente, pero la poesía no es el lenguaje nativo de mi cerebro. Por otro lado, cuando me siento confundida, desmotivada, herida o incluso perezosa, sé que puedo abrir los proverbios y encontrar un versículo que me ayude a procesar mis emociones y resolver mi problema. Esto me lleva al versículo en el que he decidido centrarme hoy:

Proverbios 19:27 dice: «Deja de escuchar la instrucción, hijo mío, y te desviarás de las palabras del conocimiento».

Me encanta aprender, y mi padre me enseñó desde pequeño que cualquier día que pasa sin aprender al menos una cosa nueva es un día perdido.  De niña, entendía que necesitaba aprender, pero asumía que, una vez que fuera adulta, lo sabría todo y ya estaría, ¿verdad? Tengo hijos pequeños a los que les encanta escuchar música de Disney, y una de nuestras favoritas es de Frozen 2. El personaje del showman canta una canción maravillosamente ingenua sobre cómo, cuando somos mayores, «absolutamente todo tiene sentido».   A veces perdemos la alegría y el asombro infantiles por aprender, pero Dios nos ha bendecido con una sabiduría infinita en la Biblia, ¡y cada vez que la abrimos tenemos la oportunidad de aprender algo nuevo! Así que, tanto si tienes 8 como 80 años, no desperdiciemos nuestros días y abramos nuestras Biblias para recibir el pan diario que Dios nos ha ofrecido.
