The Book of Proverbs -Proverbs 20 - February 20, 2026
“The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him!”
Proverbs 20:5-7 ESV
Talk is cheap. A person’s actions give discerning clues to their intentions and, ultimately, the condition of their heart. Words alone may sound convincing, but consistent patterns of behavior expose whether love, faithfulness, and integrity are genuine. Throughout this chapter, Solomon contrasts empty profession with observable character. The speech and behavior marked by abuse of alcohol (v. 1), quarreling (v.3), or deceit (v.14) are warned against. Many claim to be faithful, but a truly trustworthy person is difficult to find! Those with integrity, consistently choosing what is morally right even when no one else is watching, are a blessing to their children and to the body of Christ!
My husband came to mind while reading this chapter; our children and I are the continual beneficiaries of his integrity and faithfulness. I have such peace, knowing I can trust him with all decisions and at all times! Our children are blessed to have his example, which I hope they will always follow. Our family has also been blessed by the trustworthiness of our friends; they have cared for us at our weakest moments, true brothers and sisters who can withstand the tests of adversity. These relationships remind us that integrity is not merely an individual virtue, but a communal blessing that strengthens the whole body of Christ. In a world where trust is fragile and talk is cheap, a life of quiet, steady integrity shines with enduring impact.
My hope is that, as the body of Christ, we would all seek to live with integrity and have our actions be a positive reflection on the God we serve, “having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.”

Hablar es fácil. Las acciones de una persona dan pistas reveladoras sobre sus intenciones y, en última instancia, sobre el estado de su corazón. Las palabras por sí solas pueden sonar convincentes, pero los patrones de comportamiento consistentes revelan si el amor, la fidelidad y la integridad son genuinos. A lo largo de este capítulo, Salomón contrasta las profesiones vacías con el carácter observable. Se advierte contra el discurso y el comportamiento marcados por el abuso del alcohol (v. 1), las disputas (v. 3) o el engaño (v. 14). Mientras leía este capítulo, pensé en mi esposo; nuestros hijos y yo somos los beneficiarios constantes de su integridad y fidelidad. ¡Tengo tanta paz al saber que puedo confiar en él para todas las decisiones y en todo momento! Nuestros hijos son bendecidos por tener su ejemplo, que espero que siempre sigan. Nuestra familia también ha sido bendecida por la honradez de nuestros amigos; ellos nos han cuidado en nuestros momentos más débiles, verdaderos hermanos y hermanas que pueden soportar las pruebas de la adversidad. Estas relaciones nos recuerdan que la integridad no es solo una virtud individual, sino una bendición comunitaria que fortalece todo el cuerpo de Cristo. En un mundo donde la confianza es frágil y las palabras no valen nada, una vida de integridad tranquila y constante brilla con un impacto duradero.
Mi esperanza es que, como cuerpo de Cristo, todos busquemos vivir con integridad y que nuestras acciones sean un reflejo positivo del Dios al que servimos, «teniendo buena conciencia, para que, cuando se os calumnie, los que blasfeman contra vuestra buena conducta en Cristo sean avergonzados».
