Jesus’ Final Week - Luke 22:7-20 - April 13, 2026

Jesus's last meal.  

In prison, they give the prisoner a choice for his last meal.  Jesus had a last meal on Earth, and He chose to eat it with His disciples.  

The disciples had no idea what was happening.  You only have to look at the surrounding text to know they were confused and clueless.  I recently was reading John and Luke in Sunday school for the children, and the point came up that the disciples really did not understand the weight of the situation Jesus was in.  How much they must have learned about themselves in hindsight by writing the gospels.  

What was Jesus saying to them as they just thought it was another Passover meal? They must have really thought He was having a weird night.  But really, it was his last meal on Earth, and He was earnestly seeking to share it with them. 

One thing I thought of was that Jesus also wanted to share His last meal with us, as it is recorded for us and written.  His last meal is shared with us just as His life.  He broke his body for us.  He spilled his blood for us in a new covenant.  

As we read this, we get a glimpse into what it was like for Him, and we can share it with Him in our own way as we read it here today.  

What He was about to do, He did it for us.  He earnestly wanted to share this moment with them and us so that we knew what it meant for Him to go to the cross.  The real purpose is in this section.  His body broken for us and His blood poured out for us to create a new covenant—a new bond for all of mankind.  

Jesus earnestly wants everyone to know that he died so we could live with Him again.  He says he will return when God's kingdom comes, and he will eat and drink again, alive on Earth with all of us, during the second coming.  Every time we have communion, we are to remember his sacrifice and the reason for this new covenant.

La última cena de Jesús.

En la cárcel, a los presos se les permite elegir su última comida. Jesús tuvo una última cena en la Tierra y decidió compartirla con sus discípulos.

Los discípulos no tenían ni idea de lo que estaba pasando.  Basta con leer el texto que lo rodea para saber que estaban confundidos y desorientados.  Hace poco estaba leyendo Juan y Lucas en la escuela dominical para los niños, y surgió el tema de que los discípulos realmente no comprendían la gravedad de la situación en la que se encontraba Jesús.  Cuánto deben de haber aprendido sobre sí mismos en retrospectiva al escribir los evangelios.

¿Qué les estaba diciendo Jesús mientras ellos pensaban que solo era otra cena de Pascua? Debieron de pensar realmente que estaba pasando una noche extraña. Pero, en realidad, era su última cena en la Tierra, y Él deseaba sinceramente compartirla con ellos.

Una cosa en la que pensé fue que Jesús también quería compartir su última cena con nosotros, tal y como está registrada y escrita para nosotros. Su última cena se comparte con nosotros al igual que su vida. Él entregó su cuerpo por nosotros. Derramó su sangre por nosotros en un nuevo pacto.

Al leer esto, vislumbramos cómo fue para Él, y podemos compartirlo con Él a nuestra manera al leerlo aquí hoy.

Lo que estaba a punto de hacer, lo hizo por nosotros. Deseaba fervientemente compartir este momento con ellos y con nosotros para que supiéramos lo que significaba para Él ir a la cruz. El verdadero propósito está en esta sección. Su cuerpo partido por nosotros y su sangre derramada por nosotros para crear un nuevo pacto: un nuevo vínculo para toda la humanidad.

Jesús desea fervientemente que todos sepan que murió para que pudiéramos vivir con Él de nuevo. Dice que volverá cuando llegue el reino de Dios, y que volverá a comer y beber, vivo en la Tierra con todos nosotros, durante la segunda venida. Cada vez que tomamos la comunión, debemos recordar su sacrificio y la razón de este nuevo pacto.
