Jesus’ Final Week - John 13:1-17 - April 14, 2026
In John 13:1-17, we find the startling story of Jesus washing the disciples' filthy feet. Have you ever participated in an unexpected foot-washing ceremony? Without invading the even more personal areas of the body, the one washing is doing the next closest thing: attending to the feet! It is humbling, to say the least, especially if you weren't expecting it. And you always wear open-toed sandals on very dusty trails. Good gracious! That would make for gross feet, to say the least. Wouldn't you prefer to know in advance so you could wash your feet thoroughly? Why would Jesus focus attention on the disciples' feet (and, by extension, ours)? We have our answer at the end of verse 1. "He now showed them the full extent of His love." The FULL extent of His love, of course, was demonstrated in His death to cover the sin of His chosen ones. The foot washing exemplifies this fact: God Himself did not disdain to show His love by performing the most menial tasks of a servant.
Peter drew up his feet and said, "No, Lord!" Do you catch the ambiguous juxtaposition of those two words? No! Lord! Is He the Lord of your life, the One you obey unequivocally? You and I might have had questions for Him in that moment, but I hope we would have thought, "I really don't understand this; I don't want my Lord to wash my dirty feet. But, at the same time, I do want to submit to Him. What to do? What to do?"
When He had finished washing their feet (apparently Peter succumbed), Jesus asked, "Do you understand what I have done for you? Yes, I am your Lord and Teacher, and I want you to do for others what I have done for you. You have the most important message ever heard, and you are to carry it far and wide, but I do not want you to think more highly of yourselves than you ought to think (Ro. 12:3). Washing the feet of your listeners will help you think of yourselves appropriately, as servants. You will be blessed as you wash the feet of others in love and humility." And maybe, just maybe, they will listen more attentively.

En Juan 13:1-17, encontramos la sorprendente historia de Jesús lavando los pies sucios de los discípulos. ¿Alguna vez has participado en una ceremonia inesperada de lavado de pies? Sin invadir las zonas aún más íntimas del cuerpo, quien lava está haciendo lo más parecido: ¡atender los pies! Es humillante, por decirlo suavemente, especialmente si no te lo esperabas. Y siempre llevas sandalias abiertas en senderos muy polvorientos. ¡Por Dios! Eso haría que tus pies estuvieran asquerosos, por decirlo suavemente. ¿No preferirías saberlo de antemano para poder lavarte bien los pies? ¿Por qué centraría Jesús su atención en los pies de los discípulos (y, por extensión, en los nuestros)? Tenemos nuestra respuesta al final del versículo 1. «Ahora les mostraba el pleno alcance de su amor». El PLENO alcance de su amor, por supuesto, se demostró en su muerte para cubrir el pecado de sus elegidos. El lavado de pies ejemplifica este hecho: Dios mismo no desdeñó mostrar su amor realizando las tareas más humildes de un siervo.
Pedro retiró los pies y dijo: «¡No, Señor!». ¿Captas la ambigua yuxtaposición de esas dos palabras? ¡No! ¡Señor! ¿Es Él el Señor de tu vida, Aquel a quien obedeces sin reservas? Tú y yo podríamos haber tenido preguntas para Él en ese momento, pero espero que hubiéramos pensado: «Realmente no entiendo esto; no quiero que mi Señor me lave los pies sucios. Pero, al mismo tiempo, sí quiero someterme a Él. ¿Qué hacer? ¿Qué hacer?».
Cuando terminó de lavarles los pies (al parecer, Pedro cedió), Jesús preguntó: «¿Entienden lo que he hecho por ustedes? Sí, soy su Señor y Maestro, y quiero que hagan por los demás lo que yo he hecho por ustedes. Tenéis el mensaje más importante jamás escuchado, y debéis llevarlo por todas partes, pero no quiero que os tengáis en más alta estima de lo que debéis (Ro. 12:3). Lavar los pies de vuestros oyentes os ayudará a consideraros a vosotros mismos adecuadamente, como siervos. Seréis bendecidos al lavar los pies de los demás con amor y humildad». Y tal vez, solo tal vez, os escuchen con más atención.
