Practical Ways to Serve - Proverbs 31:20 - April 29, 2025 

"She extends her hand to the poor, and she stretches out her hands to the needy." Proverbs 31:20 

The Wonder Woman TV series and movies were spin-offs from the Wonder Woman comic books of the 1940s. The first actress to play the part was Lynda Carter. Although she had supernatural abilities in the TV series, they didn't measure up to the attributes of the biblical Wonder Woman described in Proverbs Chapter 31. Here are some of her attributes. She was hard-working, diligent, charitable, faithful, generous, humble, and wise. In this devotion, we will focus on her attributes listed in verse 20: "She extends her hand to the poor, and she stretches out her hands to the needy." 

There are many verses that focus on helping the poor; here are a couple of them: 

* Proverbs 19:17: "He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord." 

* 1 John 3:17: "Whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need, and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?" 

Some Christians push God's directives regarding helping the poor and the needy aside and rationalize their disobedience by saying, "The poor will always be with us; I can find better ways to use my time and my money for the Lord." Back in the day, our Tuesday morning Keenager bible study was discussing this subject, and after we had discussed the physical and material ways to help the poor, someone asked, "How are we to know if the person standing at the exit of a Costco or Foodmaxx parking lot with a sign that says, 'Homeless, Need Help,' is for real? Maybe if we give the person money, it will be used for alcohol or drugs." After that question was asked, Dorothy Cundall raised her hand and said, "I have found a way to help them without feeding their potential alcohol or drug addiction. I buy gift certificates from fast food restaurants like McDonalds and Burger King and give them to the people at the exits." 

Helping the needy is a bit different than helping the poor because the needy can fall into many categories (addictions, finances, emotional/relational, and spiritual issues), each requiring a different type of help. 

I believe that the bottom line for helping both the poor and the needy centers around our heart attitude. If we have a heart that desires to help these people, God will direct us on how to do it. He may direct us to be good listeners, prayer warriors, or give physical and/or financial help, and he will probably give us the ability to fulfill the admonition of Romans 12:15: "Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep."

La serie de televisión y las películas de Wonder Woman fueron derivadas de los cómics de Wonder Woman de la década de 1940. La primera actriz en interpretar el papel fue Lynda Carter. Aunque en la serie de televisión tenía poderes sobrenaturales, estos no estaban a la altura de los atributos de la Wonder Woman bíblica descrita en el capítulo 31 del libro de Proverbios. Estos son algunos de sus atributos: era trabajadora, diligente, caritativa, fiel, generosa, humilde y sabia. En esta devoción, nos centraremos en sus atributos enumerados en el versículo 20: «Extiende su mano al pobre y extiende sus manos al necesitado». 

Hay muchos versículos que se centran en ayudar a los pobres; aquí hay un par de ellos: 

* Proverbios 19:17: «El que es bondadoso con el pobre, presta al Señor». 

* 1 Juan 3:17: «Si alguien tiene bienes y ve a su hermano en necesidad, y le cierra su corazón, ¿cómo permanece el amor de Dios en él?». 

Algunos cristianos dejan de lado las directrices de Dios sobre ayudar a los pobres y necesitados y racionalizan su desobediencia diciendo: «Los pobres siempre estarán con nosotros; puedo encontrar mejores maneras de usar mi tiempo y mi dinero para el Señor». Hace tiempo, en nuestro estudio bíblico de los martes por la mañana, estábamos discutiendo este tema y, después de hablar de las formas físicas y materiales de ayudar a los pobres, alguien preguntó: «¿Cómo podemos saber si la persona que está a la salida del aparcamiento de Costco o Foodmaxx con un cartel que dice «Sin hogar, necesito ayuda» es sincera? Quizás si le damos dinero, lo gastará en alcohol o drogas». Después de esa pregunta, Dorothy Cundall levantó la mano y dijo: «He encontrado una forma de ayudarles sin alimentar su posible adicción al alcohol o las drogas. Compro vales de restaurantes de comida rápida como McDonalds y Burger King y se los doy a la gente que está en las salidas». 

Ayudar a los necesitados es un poco diferente a ayudar a los pobres, porque los necesitados pueden pertenecer a muchas categorías (adicciones, problemas económicos, emocionales/relacionales y espirituales), cada una de las cuales requiere un tipo de ayuda diferente. 

Creo que lo fundamental para ayudar tanto a los pobres como a los necesitados es nuestra actitud de corazón. Si tenemos un corazón que desea ayudar a estas personas, Dios nos guiará sobre cómo hacerlo. Puede que nos guíe para ser buenos oyentes, guerreros de la oración o para dar ayuda física y/o económica, y probablemente nos dará la capacidad de cumplir la advertencia de Romanos 12:15: «Alégrense con los que se alegran, y lloren con los que lloran».
