Jesus’ Final Week - Matthew 21:33-46 - April 6, 2026

Matthew 21:40–41 - “When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

In the early 1800s, a man named Thomas Beale supposedly discovered a vast treasure, thousands of pounds of gold, silver, and jewels. Before disappearing, he left behind three coded messages—one describing the treasure, one identifying its rightful owners, and one revealing its location. Only one has ever been cracked. The treasure remains hidden to this day.

If you knew your time on earth was coming to an end, what would you say? Most of us would express love to family and friends or seek forgiveness from those we’ve hurt.  During the urgency of His final week, Jesus tells the parable of the tenants.  This parable is simple and cuts to the heart: God owns everything. We are stewards, not owners. He expects fruit. And how we respond to His messengers reveals our hearts.

The Beale story captures my imagination—hidden treasure, unsolved codes, a mystery that endures. He left behind a message that people are still trying to decode in hopes of gaining riches. Jesus also left us a message—but His is not hidden. It is clear. And yet, it is often ignored.

How do we apply this today? Two clear ways.

First, what is God asking of you that you are withholding? Time, service, money—we already know the answers. God calls us to invest what He has entrusted to us, often through His church. Yet when He asks, we resist, holding back what was never ours to begin with.

Second, live ready. Jesus teaches readiness—and models urgency. We do not know how much time we have. Whether He returns soon or calls us home, the call is the same: be faithful with what you’ve been given and share the Gospel while you can. God is not hiding treasure—He is looking for faithful stewards.

Lord, thank you for showing us how to live. Give me urgency to use all that you have entrusted to me for your glory. Help me to faithfully share your good news with those around me. Amen.

Mateo 21:40–41 - «Cuando venga, pues, el dueño de la viña, ¿qué hará con esos labradores?» Le respondieron: «Dará a esos malvados una muerte atroz y arrendará la viña a otros labradores que le entreguen los frutos a su tiempo».

A principios del siglo XIX, un hombre llamado Thomas Beale supuestamente descubrió un vasto tesoro: miles de libras de oro, plata y joyas. Antes de desaparecer, dejó tres mensajes codificados: uno que describía el tesoro, otro que identificaba a sus legítimos propietarios y otro que revelaba su ubicación. Solo uno ha sido descifrado. El tesoro permanece oculto hasta el día de hoy.

Si supieras que tu tiempo en la tierra está llegando a su fin, ¿qué dirías? La mayoría de nosotros expresaríamos nuestro amor a la familia y los amigos o buscaríamos el perdón de aquellos a quienes hemos herido.  En medio de la urgencia de su última semana, Jesús cuenta la parábola de los labradores.  Esta parábola es sencilla y llega al corazón: Dios es el dueño de todo. Nosotros somos administradores, no propietarios. Él espera frutos. Y la forma en que respondemos a sus mensajeros revela lo que hay en nuestro corazón.

La historia de Beale cautiva mi imaginación: un tesoro escondido, códigos sin descifrar, un misterio que perdura. Dejó tras de sí un mensaje que la gente sigue intentando descifrar con la esperanza de obtener riquezas. Jesús también nos dejó un mensaje, pero el suyo no está oculto. Es claro. Y, sin embargo, a menudo se ignora.

¿Cómo aplicamos esto hoy? De dos maneras claras.

En primer lugar, ¿qué te está pidiendo Dios que tú estás reteniendo? Tiempo, servicio, dinero: ya sabemos las respuestas. Dios nos llama a invertir lo que nos ha confiado, a menudo a través de su iglesia. Sin embargo, cuando Él nos lo pide, nos resistimos, reteniendo lo que nunca fue nuestro para empezar.

En segundo lugar, vive preparado. Jesús enseña a estar preparados y da ejemplo de urgencia. No sabemos cuánto tiempo nos queda. Tanto si regresa pronto como si nos llama a su lado, el llamado es el mismo: sé fiel con lo que se te ha dado y comparte el Evangelio mientras puedas. Dios no está escondiendo un tesoro; está buscando administradores fieles.

Señor, gracias por mostrarnos cómo vivir. Dame la urgencia de usar todo lo que me has confiado para tu gloria. Ayúdame a compartir fielmente tus buenas nuevas con quienes me rodean. Amén.
