Jesus’ Final Week - Matthew 22:34-40 - April 7, 2026

Have you ever noticed, that when your relationship with God is in the rightful and proper  perspective, there is a “peace and joy” that permeates our soul, even in life’s most difficult circumstances.

In Jesus’ final week on earth, the words revealed by the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, Deut.10:12, are repeated by the Son inMatt.22:37.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heartand with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Mark 12:31 adds a fourth description; “all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

When we love the Lord with all our heart, it is center of our emotions, our desires and our personal will. When we love the Lord with all our soul, it is with our very essence of life, our spirit. When we love the Lord with all of our mind, it is with our intellect, understanding and reasoning. When we love the Lord with all our strength, it is with our physical capabilities and resources.

Then Jesus adds another element to His answer to the question. The 2nd commandment, “that is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Interesting … so why is the 2nd commandment like the 1st? Both are directed to “love,” and both are about critical relationships in our lives. Our first and foremost is our relationship with God, and the second is our relationships to the people that God brings into our lives.

I find it amazing that God can so easily, with infinite wisdom, so compact our purpose and direction for life with these two commandments!

¿Te has dado cuenta alguna vez de que, cuando tu relación con Dios se encuentra en la perspectiva correcta y adecuada, hay una «paz y alegría» que impregna nuestra alma, incluso en las circunstancias más difíciles de la vida?

En la última semana de Jesús en la tierra, las palabras reveladas por el Espíritu Santo en el Antiguo Testamento, en Deuteronomio 10:12, son repetidas por el Hijo en Mateo 22:37.

«Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante de la Ley?» Y él le dijo: «Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el mandamiento mayor y el primero. Y hay otro igual a éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos dependen toda la Ley y los Profetas».

Marcos 12:31 añade una cuarta descripción: «todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas».

Cuando amamos al Señor con todo nuestro corazón, es el centro de nuestras emociones, nuestros deseos y nuestra voluntad personal. Cuando amamos al Señor con toda nuestra alma, es con nuestra misma esencia de vida, nuestro espíritu. Cuando amamos al Señor con toda nuestra mente, es con nuestro intelecto, nuestro entendimiento y nuestro razonamiento. Cuando amamos al Señor con todas nuestras fuerzas, es con nuestras capacidades y recursos físicos.

Entonces Jesús añade otro elemento a su respuesta a la pregunta. El segundo mandamiento, «que es semejante a éste: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo». Interesante… ¿por qué es el segundo mandamiento semejante al primero? Ambos se refieren al «amor», y ambos tratan de relaciones fundamentales en nuestras vidas. Lo primero y más importante es nuestra relación con Dios, y lo segundo son nuestras relaciones con las personas que Dios pone en nuestras vidas.

¡Me parece asombroso que Dios pueda, con tanta facilidad y sabiduría infinita, resumir así nuestro propósito y dirección en la vida con estos dos mandamientos!

Entonces, ¿cómo va tu relación con Dios? ¿Lo amas con todo tu corazón, alma, mente y fuerzas?

¿Cómo van tus relaciones con las personas de tu vida? ¿Las amas como a ti mismo?
