Attributes of God - God is Sovereign - May 11, 2026

As we consider God’s Sovereignty, we examine His treatment of King Nebuchadnezzar. This King had many opportunities to recognize the power and sovereignty of Almighty God in His dealings with Daniel and the three Hebrew princes. Yet, he proclaimed: “Is not this the great Babylon I have built… by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” 

God gives a real comeuppance to Nebuchadnezzar for this boastful declaration of his own sovereignty. He is driven away from people and lives with wild animals, eating grass. I suppose that’s where my mom’s phrase came from when we kids were unreasonable; she would say, “Oh, go to grass and eat hay!” :-) Anyway, that proclamation of God was fulfilled; the King was drenched with dew, his “hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his claws like those of a bird”. He remained in that condition for “seven times”. Seven weeks? Seven years? We are not told what “seven times” means. It was long enough for those physical manifestations to be seen.

At the end of that time, Nebuchadnezzar’s sanity was restored, and he praised God with the eloquent words of Daniel 4:34-35. He continued to “praise, exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything He does is right and all His ways are just. Those who walk in pride, He is able to humble.” Sounds good, but he never explicitly affirms the God of Israel as the only supreme Creator of the universe – the One to Whom he would bow the knee.

God continues to rule over ALL things and does with them as He pleases in His providential control of history. We are continually told in explicit terms that the LORD (Yahweh) reigns as King, exercising dominion over great and tiny things alike (Ex. 15:8; Ps. 47; 93; 96:10; 97; 99:1-5; 146:10; Pr. 16:33; 21:1; Isa. 24:23; 52:7; Dan. 4:34-35; 5:21-28; 6:26; Mt. 10:29-31). God’s dominion over history is total; He carries out all that He decrees, and none can stay His hand or thwart His eternal plan. 

Each event in your life is an assignment specifically selected for you and comes from the hand of the Sovereign Father, who loves you unreservedly. Each assignment is designed to promote His agenda: His glory and your good –the conforming of your life more accurately to represent Jesus Christ in your sphere of influence. When your deepest desire is to see Him glorified, and trust your greatest good comes in conjunction with that, there is joy, even in trials of various kinds.

Al considerar la soberanía de Dios, examinamos Su trato con el rey Nabucodonosor. Este rey tuvo muchas oportunidades de reconocer el poder y la soberanía del Dios Todopoderoso en Su trato con Daniel y los tres jóvenes hebreos. Sin embargo, proclamó: “¿No es esta la gran Babilonia que yo he edificado… con mi gran poder y para la gloria de mi majestad?”

Dios le da a Nabucodonosor una verdadera lección por esta declaración arrogante de su propia soberanía. Es expulsado de entre la gente y vive con los animales salvajes, comiendo hierba. Supongo que de ahí viene la frase de mi mamá cuando nosotros, sus hijos, nos poníamos irrazonables; ella decía: “¡Ay, vete al pasto y come heno!” :-) En fin, esa proclamación de Dios se cumplió. El rey quedó empapado con el rocío, su “cabello creció como plumas de águila y sus uñas como las de las aves”. Permaneció en esa condición durante “siete tiempos”. ¿Siete semanas? ¿Siete años? No se nos dice qué significa “siete tiempos”. Pero fue suficiente tiempo para que se vieran esas manifestaciones físicas.

Al final de ese tiempo, la cordura de Nabucodonosor le fue restaurada, y alabó a Dios con las elocuentes palabras de Daniel 4:34–35. Continuó “alabando, exaltando y glorificando al Rey del cielo, porque todo lo que Él hace es correcto y todos Sus caminos son justos. A los que caminan con orgullo, Él los puede humillar”. Suena bien, pero nunca afirma explícitamente que el Dios de Israel sea el único Creador supremo del universo, Aquel ante quien él debía doblar la rodilla.

Dios sigue gobernando sobre todas las cosas y hace con ellas como le place en Su control providencial de la historia. Una y otra vez se nos dice en términos claros que el Señor —Yahvé— reina como Rey, ejerciendo dominio tanto sobre las cosas grandes como sobre las pequeñas (Éxodo 15:8; Salmos 47; 93; 96:10; 97; 99:1–5; 146:10; Proverbios 16:33; 21:1; Isaías 24:23; 52:7; Daniel 4:34–35; 5:21–28; 6:26; Mateo 10:29–31). El dominio de Dios sobre la historia es total. Él lleva a cabo todo lo que decreta, y nadie puede detener Su mano ni frustrar Su plan eterno.

Cada acontecimiento en tu vida es una asignación específicamente escogida para ti y viene de la mano del Padre soberano, quien te ama sin reservas. Cada asignación está diseñada para promover Su propósito: Su gloria y tu bien, es decir, que tu vida sea conformada cada vez más fielmente para representar a Jesucristo en tu esfera de influencia. Cuando tu deseo más profundo es verlo glorificado, y confías en que tu mayor bien viene unido a eso, hay gozo, aun en medio de pruebas de diversas clases.
