Attributes of God - God is Faithful - May 19, 2026

Lamentations 3:22-23 - "Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Do you watch the news or read the latest headlines and think there is nothing positive happening in the world? Is it all terrible? It’s easy to become depressed or cynical when all we consume is negative news.  Even if that news is true, it may not be helpful.  When my son was young, he had a very direct way of speaking, and he would “tell it as it is.”  He even told his whole Kindergarten class that Santa Claus was not real, and it caused quite a scene. We would constantly remind him to say not only what is true, but also what is helpful and kind.

In the first two chapters of Lamentations, the prophet and author, Jeremiah, laments over the destruction of Jerusalem, the temple, and his own personal distress.  He cries out, complains, and shows intense grief. It is a time of great sadness and hopelessness.

Then comes chapter 3, verses 21-23 and the focus changes.  It reads, “Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

“Yet” is a powerful word.  It is the bridge to hope. Jeremiah stops focusing on all the negative, even though it is very true and real, and he shifts to hope.  The awful circumstances had not changed, but because of the Lord’s great love, Jeremiah trusts that God will be with him during this troublesome time.

We too can trust that God is with us in our circumstances. Because of His great love, we can have hope.  He is faithful. So, each new morning we can have a fresh supply of His compassion and grace.

Lamentaciones 3:22–23 – “Por el gran amor del Señor no somos consumidos, porque nunca decaen Sus misericordias. Son nuevas cada mañana; grande es Tu fidelidad.”

¿Ves las noticias o lees los titulares más recientes y piensas que no está pasando nada positivo en el mundo? ¿Todo es terrible? Es fácil deprimirse o volverse cínico cuando todo lo que consumimos son noticias negativas. Incluso si esas noticias son ciertas, puede que no sean útiles.

Cuando mi hijo era pequeño, tenía una manera muy directa de hablar y “decía las cosas tal como eran”. Incluso le dijo a toda su clase de kínder que Santa Claus no era real, y eso causó bastante alboroto. Constantemente le recordábamos que debía decir no solo lo que era verdad, sino también lo que era útil y amable.

En los primeros dos capítulos de Lamentaciones, el profeta y autor, Jeremías, lamenta la destrucción de Jerusalén, del templo y su propia angustia personal. Clama, se queja y expresa un dolor profundo. Es un tiempo de gran tristeza y desesperanza.

Entonces llega el capítulo 3, versículos 21–23, y el enfoque cambia. Dice: “Pero esto traigo a la memoria, y por eso tengo esperanza: Por el gran amor del Señor no somos consumidos, porque nunca decaen Sus misericordias. Son nuevas cada mañana; grande es Tu fidelidad”.

“Pero” es una palabra poderosa. Es el puente hacia la esperanza. Jeremías deja de enfocarse en todo lo negativo, aunque era muy cierto y real, y cambia su mirada hacia la esperanza. Las terribles circunstancias no habían cambiado, pero por causa del gran amor del Señor, Jeremías confía en que Dios estará con él durante ese tiempo difícil.

Nosotros también podemos confiar en que Dios está con nosotros en nuestras circunstancias. Por causa de Su gran amor, podemos tener esperanza. Él es fiel. Así que cada nueva mañana podemos recibir una provisión fresca de Su compasión y gracia.

Una canción que viene a mi mente cuando reflexiono en este versículo es: El amor firme del Señor.
