Daily Word of Encouragement 5.30.25 - Todd Baker

A Study in 1 Samuel - 1 Samuel 30 - May 30, 2025 

"Then David and the people who were with him, raised their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep." 1 Samuel 30:4 

There are two takeaways for us from 1 Samuel 30. The first one comes from the first six verses. The Amalekites had attacked Ziklag, taken captive all the wives and children (including David's two wives), and burned the city to the ground. The response of David and his men when they arrived and found everyone gone and the town burned to the ground was to raise their voices and weep until there was no strength left in them to weep. Their passion and sincerity caught God's attention, and He instructed David to pursue the Amalekites, promising that all the captives would be rescued. David and his men followed God's directions, slaughtered the Amalekites, and rescued everyone. The takeaway for us from these verses is that when we are in the midst of a crisis or some disaster that has befallen us, we should take the situation passionately before the Lord before we do anything else. His counsel and guidance may take us in a totally different direction than the logic of our human nature.  

The second half of this chapter describes how David divided up the spoils of his victory. He didn't just divide it up among his men who were with him and his friends. He shared it with the people in the surrounding cities who had had no part in his victory. To me, the takeaway from this example is that when we receive some material or spiritual blessing from the Lord, we shouldn't hoard it all for ourselves and our families; instead, we should share some of it with others who are more in need than we are. You may think that this is a stretch, but I believe that this example can also guide us in how to divide our inheritance.

«Entonces David y los que estaban con él alzaron la voz y lloraron hasta que no les quedó más fuerza para llorar». 1 Samuel 30:4 

Hay dos lecciones que podemos extraer de 1 Samuel 30. La primera proviene de los primeros seis versículos. Los amalecitas habían atacado Siclag, capturado a todas las mujeres y niños (incluidas las dos esposas de David) y quemado la ciudad hasta los cimientos. La respuesta de David y sus hombres cuando llegaron y encontraron a todos desaparecidos y la ciudad reducida a cenizas fue levantar la voz y llorar hasta que no les quedaron fuerzas para llorar. Su pasión y sinceridad llamaron la atención de Dios, quien ordenó a David que persiguiera a los amalecitas, prometiéndole que todos los cautivos serían rescatados. David y sus hombres siguieron las instrucciones de Dios, mataron a los amalecitas y rescataron a todos. La lección que podemos extraer de estos versículos es que, cuando nos encontramos en medio de una crisis o de algún desastre que nos ha sobrevenido, debemos presentar la situación con pasión ante el Señor antes de hacer nada más. Su consejo y guía pueden llevarnos en una dirección totalmente diferente a la lógica de nuestra naturaleza humana. 

La segunda mitad de este capítulo describe cómo David dividió el botín de su victoria. No se limitó a repartirlo entre sus hombres que estaban con él y sus amigos. Lo compartió con la gente de las ciudades vecinas que no había participado en su victoria. Para mí, la lección que se desprende de este ejemplo es que cuando recibimos alguna bendición material o espiritual del Señor, no debemos acapararla toda para nosotros y nuestras familias, sino que debemos compartirla con otros que la necesitan más que nosotros. Puede que pienses que esto es exagerado, pero creo que este ejemplo también puede guiarnos a la hora de dividir nuestra herencia.
