Attributes of God - God is Our Father - May 31, 2026
Romans 8:14-17 - For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Have you ever heard the story of a driver in Ohio who sped over 100 mph,
causing a series of accidents because she believed God told her to do so? When
questioned by the police, she said, “Let go and let God take the wheel.” Hearing
about this incident saddened me, because it proved how misguided theology can
lead us into situations where we feel deeply convicted, only to face
disappointment. This highlights the importance of grounding our faith in solid
theological foundations.
Verse 14 is often misinterpreted, especially regarding what it means to be led by
the Spirit. God, as a caring Father, desires we live free from sin, knowing the
serious consequences it brings. In this context, being led by the Spirit means
actively avoiding sin and putting the desires of the flesh to death.
God is our heavenly Father who wants the best for us. He has given us the Holy
Spirit to guide our lives, inviting us to live in true freedom—not the bondage of
sin, but freedom that leads to eternal life. The passage we are reflecting on
describes two distinct spirits. As RC Sproul explains: “One is the spirit of
bondage, which is produced by the flesh. It is the spirit of the unregenerate
person. Such people remain in prison. They are incarcerated by their old nature.
They are slaves to the sinful impulses of their recalcitrant hearts. However, if we
have the Spirit within us, we no longer have the spirit of bondage. We are no
longer shaking and quaking in servile fear before the Lord God. We now have the
spirit of adoption.”
God’s love for us is immense that He has adopted us and desires to lead us
every day so we can live life to the fullest. This doesn’t mean everything will be
easy, but it does mean God will be with us every step of the way. That’s why we
can confidently cry out, “Abba Father”—or, in English, “Daddy” or “Papa.”
As you move forward, remember you can always come to God as your loving
Father and trust Him with all your heart, He has lovingly adopted you and left you
and eternal inheritance.

Romanos 8:14-17 — Porque todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios son hijos de Dios. Pues no habéis recibido el espíritu de esclavitud para estar otra vez en temor, sino que habéis recibido el Espíritu de adopción como hijos, por quien clamamos: “¡Abba, Padre!” El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu de que somos hijos de Dios, y si hijos, también herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo, si es que padecemos juntamente con Él, para que juntamente con Él seamos glorificados.
¿Alguna vez has escuchado la historia de una conductora en Ohio que manejó a más de 100 millas por hora, causando una serie de accidentes porque creía que Dios le había dicho que lo hiciera? Cuando la policía la interrogó, ella respondió: “Suéltalo y deja que Dios tome el volante.” Escuchar acerca de este incidente me entristeció, porque demostró cómo una teología equivocada puede llevarnos a situaciones donde nos sentimos profundamente convencidos, solo para enfrentar decepción. Esto resalta la importancia de fundamentar nuestra fe sobre bases teológicas sólidas.
El versículo 14 a menudo es malinterpretado, especialmente en cuanto a lo que significa ser guiados por el Espíritu. Dios, como un Padre amoroso, desea que vivamos libres del pecado, conociendo las graves consecuencias que este trae. En este contexto, ser guiados por el Espíritu significa evitar activamente el pecado y hacer morir los deseos de la carne.
Dios es nuestro Padre celestial que quiere lo mejor para nosotros. Él nos ha dado el Espíritu Santo para guiar nuestras vidas, invitándonos a vivir en verdadera libertad—no en la esclavitud del pecado, sino en una libertad que conduce a la vida eterna. El pasaje sobre el cual estamos reflexionando describe dos espíritus distintos. Como explica RC Sproul: “Uno es el espíritu de esclavitud, producido por la carne. Es el espíritu de la persona no regenerada. Tales personas permanecen en prisión. Están encarceladas por su vieja naturaleza. Son esclavas de los impulsos pecaminosos de sus corazones rebeldes. Sin embargo, si tenemos el Espíritu dentro de nosotros, ya no tenemos el espíritu de esclavitud. Ya no temblamos de miedo servil delante del Señor Dios. Ahora tenemos el espíritu de adopción.”
El amor de Dios por nosotros es tan inmenso que nos ha adoptado y desea guiarnos cada día para que podamos vivir la vida en plenitud. Esto no significa que todo será fácil, pero sí significa que Dios estará con nosotros en cada paso del camino. Por eso podemos clamar con confianza: “Abba Padre”—o, en español, “Papá” o “Padre querido.”
Mientras avanzas, recuerda que siempre puedes acercarte a Dios como a tu Padre amoroso y confiar en Él con todo tu corazón. Él te ha adoptado amorosamente y te ha dejado una herencia eterna.
