A Study in 1 Samuel - 1 Samuel 6 - May 6, 2025 

In 1 Samuel, chapter 5, the Ark of the Lord was captured by the Philistines, and chapter 6 describes its return to Israel. Since Moses had made the Ark of the Covenant, it had been carried before the Israelites wherever they went. As Joshua entered the promised land and approached Jericho, the Ark went before them. 

The reputation and fear of this almighty God went with, and even preceded, the Israelites. So much so, when Joshua sent the two spies into Jericho, Rahab said in Joshua 2:11, “And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the LORD your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” 

This was repeated again in Joshua 5:1, “All the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them.” 

So reading in 1 Samuel chapter 6, seventy men of Besh-Shemesh looked upon the Ark, and the Lord struck them down. Then the people responded, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?” (1 Sam.6:20). So, take a minute to think about that … stop reading and think about that. That was their question … and it is ours today; who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? The answer, of course, is no one! It is impossible to approach a holy, perfect God who instills fear, awe, and reverence and melts the hearts of men. There are no works I can perform or money I can give to merit the ability to stand before an awesome God. 

No one can stand before God in their sinful state. But the good news, thanks be to God, who sent His Son to save us from our sin. Isn’t it interesting that no one can stand before our holy God, yet God sent Jesus to stand before man? In His perfect humanity, His love and compassion melted the hearts of man as He revealed God’s plan of salvation. 

Lord, thank you for sending your Son to die for us. May our hearts be kindled afresh as we read the very words you spoke to men and women, face-to-face, God in the flesh. May we not grow cold or be lukewarm but fully on fire and alive in You. Amen.

En 1 Samuel, capítulo 5, el arca del Señor fue capturada por los filisteos, y el capítulo 6 describe su regreso a Israel. Desde que Moisés había fabricado el arca de la alianza, había sido llevada ante los israelitas dondequiera que iban. Cuando Josué entró en la tierra prometida y se acercó a Jericó, el arca iba delante de ellos. 

La reputación y el temor de este Dios todopoderoso acompañaban e incluso precedían a los israelitas. Tanto era así que, cuando Josué envió a los dos espías a Jericó, Rahab dijo en Josué 2:11: «En cuanto lo oímos, nuestros corazones se derritieron, y no quedó espíritu en ningún hombre por causa de vosotros, porque el Señor vuestro Dios es Dios en los cielos arriba y en la tierra abajo». 

Esto se repitió de nuevo en Josué 5:1: «Todos los reyes de los cananeos que estaban junto al mar oyeron que el Señor había secado las aguas del Jordán para que el pueblo de Israel pasara, sus corazones se derritieron y no quedó espíritu en ellos». 

Así que, leyendo en 1 Samuel, capítulo 6, setenta hombres de Bes-Semes miraron el arca, y el Señor los hirió. Entonces el pueblo respondió: «¿Quién puede estar delante del Señor, este Dios santo?» (1 Sam. 6:20). Así que, tómate un minuto para pensar en eso... deja de leer y piensa en eso. Esa era su pregunta... y es la nuestra hoy: ¿quién puede presentarse ante el Señor, este Dios santo? La respuesta, por supuesto, es nadie. Es imposible acercarse a un Dios santo y perfecto que infunde temor, asombro y reverencia, y derrite los corazones de los hombres. No hay obras que yo pueda realizar ni dinero que pueda dar para merecer la capacidad de presentarme ante un Dios tan impresionante. 

Nadie puede presentarse ante Dios en su estado pecaminoso. Pero la buena noticia, gracias a Dios, es que Él envió a Su Hijo para salvarnos de nuestro pecado. ¿No es interesante que nadie pueda presentarse ante nuestro Dios santo, y sin embargo Dios envió a Jesús para presentarse ante el hombre? En Su perfecta humanidad, Su amor y compasión derritieron los corazones de los hombres al revelar el plan de salvación de Dios. 

Señor, gracias por enviar a tu Hijo a morir por nosotros. Que nuestros corazones se enciendan de nuevo al leer las mismas palabras que tú dijiste a los hombres y mujeres, cara a cara, Dios encarnado. Que no nos enfriemos ni seamos tibios, sino que estemos completamente encendidos y vivos en ti. Amén.
