Attributes of God - God is Infinite - May 6, 2026

To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:25-28)  

What is the most infinite thing you can think of?

Recently, with the Artemis II mission, I was talking about space travel with my kids. My 4-year-old son doesn’t have a strong grasp of time and distance yet. When I tell him we need to wait a couple of hours to go play T-Ball, he says, “ok… like 2 minutes? Or 10 minutes?”  While showing him pictures and explaining what was happening, I told him it would take a long time to fly to the moon and back. He said, “Wow… like 10 minutes or 20?”

He doesn’t have the categories to understand that kind of distance.  And honestly, neither do we.  Space is probably the most infinite thing I can think of. If we could survive, we could travel in the fastest rocket away from Earth in any direction and never reach an end. That’s hard even to begin to grasp.  And even that—endless space—is still small compared to God.  Even if I spent my entire life exploring the universe, my life would eventually end. But God has no beginning and no end. He does not grow weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

So when Isaiah says, “Why do you say… ‘My way is hidden from the Lord?”  It hits closer to home.  Where have you felt that way?  What situation in your life feels unseen, overlooked, or too long to wait through?  The God who created and sustains everything—the One who calls every star by name—is not distant or unaware. Not one is missing. And neither are you.  Since we can’t fully grasp what it means for God to be infinite, what is our response?  Worship!

Lord, I worship you for something that I cannot understand. Your existence outside of time should cause me to regularly respond in worship. You are so far beyond me.  You do not grow weary—but I do.  You understand all things—but I don’t.  And yet, it is a privilege to know you—and that you know me. You have known every person you have created for all of time.  Right now, I want to slow down and worship you because:

May all of these things bring comfort to me today—not because I am in control, but because you are.  The One who numbers the stars has not lost track of me.  Amen.

Aquel que saca a su ejército por número, llamándolos a todos por su nombre; por la grandeza de su poder y porque es fuerte en poder, no falta ni uno solo. ¿Por qué dices, oh Jacob, y hablas, oh Israel: «Mi camino está oculto al Señor, y mi derecho es despreciado por mi Dios»? ¿No lo has sabido? ¿No lo has oído? El Señor es el Dios eterno, el Creador de los confines de la tierra. No se cansa ni se fatiga; su entendimiento es insondable. (Isaías 40:25-28)

¿Qué es lo más infinito que se te ocurre?

Hace poco, con motivo de la misión Artemis II, estaba hablando de los viajes espaciales con mis hijos. Mi hijo de 4 años aún no tiene una idea clara del tiempo y la distancia. Cuando le digo que tenemos que esperar un par de horas para ir a jugar al T-Ball, me dice: «Vale… ¿como 2 minutos? ¿O 10 minutos?».  Mientras le enseñaba fotos y le explicaba lo que estaba pasando, le dije que se tardaría mucho tiempo en volar a la Luna y volver. Él dijo: «Vaya… ¿unos 10 o 20 minutos?».

No tiene los conceptos necesarios para entender ese tipo de distancia.  Y, sinceramente, nosotros tampoco.  El espacio es probablemente lo más infinito que se me ocurre. Si pudiéramos sobrevivir, podríamos viajar en el cohete más rápido alejándonos de la Tierra en cualquier dirección y nunca llegaríamos al final. Eso es difícil incluso de empezar a comprender.  E incluso eso —el espacio infinito— sigue siendo pequeño comparado con Dios.  Aunque pasara toda mi vida explorando el universo, mi vida acabaría llegando a su fin. Pero Dios no tiene principio ni fin. Él no se cansa. Su entendimiento es insondable.

Así que cuando Isaías dice: «¿Por qué dices… “Mi camino está oculto al Señor?”, me toca más de cerca. ¿En qué momentos te has sentido así? ¿Qué situación en tu vida te parece invisible, ignorada o demasiado larga como para esperar a que pase? El Dios que creó y sostiene todo —Aquel que llama a cada estrella por su nombre— no está lejos ni es indiferente. No falta ni una sola. Y tú tampoco.  Puesto que no podemos comprender plenamente lo que significa que Dios sea infinito, ¿cuál es nuestra respuesta? ¡Adoración!

Señor, te adoro por algo que no puedo entender. Tu existencia fuera del tiempo debería llevarme a responder regularmente con adoración. Estás tan por encima de mí. Tú no te cansas, pero yo sí.  Tú lo entiendes todo, pero yo no. Y, sin embargo, es un privilegio conocerte, y que tú me conozcas. Has conocido a cada persona que has creado desde siempre. Ahora mismo, quiero detenerme y adorarte porque: Que todas estas cosas me traigan consuelo hoy, no porque yo tenga el control, sino porque tú lo tienes. Aquel que cuenta las estrellas no me ha perdido de vista. Amén.
