A Study in 1 Samuel - 1 Samuel 8 - May 8, 2025 

Israel Demands a King! 

An ancient story with powerful application to our present life. 

The old saying goes, “Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it!” 

A little background: The people of the nation of Israel did not like the way the judges were ruling and asked Samuel to appoint a king over them to replace the judges to rule as other countries did. 

They apparently ignored the fact that God was their King, and He had raised up the judges to deliver them from the hands of those who plundered them the last time Israel had rebelled against God (Judges 2:14-16). 

God kept telling Israel to obey and do what He asked. This pleased God and would result in their best life. Israel again resisted the lessons God kept trying to teach them and considered rebelling against Him again by doing what they wanted (hmmm, have I ever done that???). 

Their loving God even sent Samuel to warn them of the dire consequences that would occur if they insisted on an earthly king. 

Verse 19-20 tells us how the people reacted: “But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.” 

They chose the world’s way over God’s way. 

And God, being gracious, gave them their desires. And they would suffer greatly because they insisted on “their way.” 

You probably see where this is going. 

From the beginning, our loving God has been telling us that His purposes and plans are best. All we need to do is discern them and live into them with His help. 

Simple, but not easy. 

God tells us that if we seek Him with all our heart and soul, we will find Him, and He will show us when and what we are to do as the next part of His plan (His will). God even reminds us He will provide His strength and His enabling gifts so we can join Him in doing it. 

God also encourages us to take this intentional journey with other spiritual brothers and sisters. 

We are blessed to have such a community of believers at Hessel who are willing and available to encourage, support, and pray one for another as we daily navigate this thing called life. 

Do you get together regularly with trustworthy, loving people to share, encourage, and pray about what God is revealing about His desires for you? If so, continue to nurture these relationships and make them a priority. 

If not, ask God to show you people He wants you to join with and commit to partaking in these precious relationships. 

This is the pathway that leads to our best life now and on into a glorious, heavenly eternity.

¡Israel exige un rey! 

Una historia antigua con una poderosa aplicación a nuestra vida actual. 

Dice un viejo refrán: «Ten cuidado con lo que pides, porque podrías conseguirlo». 

Un poco de contexto: Al pueblo de la nación de Israel no le gustaba la forma en que gobernaban los jueces y le pidió a Samuel que nombrara un rey para que los gobernara, en lugar de los jueces, como hacían otros países. 

Aparentemente, ignoraban el hecho de que Dios era su Rey y que Él había levantado a los jueces para liberarlos de las manos de aquellos que los saquearon la última vez que Israel se rebeló contra Dios (Jueces 2:14-16). 

Dios siguió diciéndole a Israel que obedeciera y hiciera lo que Él le pedía. Esto agradaba a Dios y les daría una vida mejor. Israel volvió a resistirse a las lecciones que Dios intentaba enseñarle y consideró rebelarse contra Él otra vez haciendo lo que quería (mmm, ¿alguna vez he hecho eso?). 

Su Dios amoroso incluso envió a Samuel para advertirles de las graves consecuencias que tendrían si insistían en tener un rey terrenal. 

Los versículos 19-20 nos dicen cómo reaccionó el pueblo: «Pero el pueblo se negó a escuchar la advertencia de Samuel. «Aun así, queremos un rey», dijeron. «Queremos ser como las naciones que nos rodean. Nuestro rey nos juzgará y nos guiará en la batalla». 

Eligieron el camino del mundo en lugar del camino de Dios. 

Y Dios, en su misericordia, les concedió lo que deseaban. Y sufrieron mucho por insistir en «su camino». 

Probablemente ya veis adónde va esto. 

Desde el principio, nuestro Dios amoroso nos ha estado diciendo que sus propósitos y planes son los mejores. Todo lo que tenemos que hacer es discernirlos y vivir según ellos con su ayuda. 

Es sencillo, pero no fácil. 

Dios nos dice que si lo buscamos con todo nuestro corazón y con toda nuestra alma, lo encontraremos, y Él nos mostrará cuándo y qué debemos hacer como siguiente parte de Su plan (Su voluntad). Dios incluso nos recuerda que nos dará Su fuerza y Sus dones para que podamos unirnos a Él en esta tarea. 

Dios también nos anima a emprender este viaje intencionado con otros hermanos y hermanas espirituales. 

Somos bendecidos por tener una comunidad de creyentes en Hessel que están dispuestos y disponibles para animarnos, apoyarnos y orar unos por otros mientras navegamos diariamente por esta cosa llamada vida. 

¿Te reúnes regularmente con personas confiables y amorosas para compartir, animarte y orar por lo que Dios te está revelando acerca de Sus deseos para ti? Si es así, continúa cultivando estas relaciones y hazlas una prioridad. 

Si no es así, pide a Dios que te muestre a las personas con las que quiere que te unas y comprométete a participar en estas preciosas relaciones. 

Este es el camino que nos lleva a nuestra mejor vida ahora y a una gloriosa eternidad celestial.
