Daily Word of Encouragement 6.16.26 - Annie Olcese

Ezra|Esther|Nehemiah - Esther 6 - June 16, 2026

Today's verses include all of Esther chapter 6, which my translation has titled "Mordecai Honored." 

In the past few days, we learned the history behind why Mordecai and Haman had such a hatred for each other- it was a long-standing family tradition.  Up to this point, Haman seems to have had the upper hand due to his position of power, and he has had no problem abusing his influence over the king.  At the beginning of this chapter, he is even plotting to have Mordecai hanged.  But God never leaves things half done, and he isn't done with Mordecai. 

Way back in chapter 2, Mordecai saved the king's life by uncovering an assassination plot, and although he never received any reward, his deeds are written down in the king's records. Fast forward to chapter 6, where the king can't sleep, so he decides to have those same records read to him as a relaxing bedtime story. 

When he realizes he plumb forgot to reward Mordecai, he asks Haman in a roundabout way what reward should be given. Haman, self-centeredly thinking this reward is for himself, spills his deepest desires, only to have it turned around on him, and suddenly he becomes the one leading Mordecai's horse and calling out honors to the Jewish man he hates so much.  

When it's finally over, he runs home in shame and anger and vents to his wife.  She has been a cunning instigator of Haman's plots all along, but this time she cautions him. 

As others have pointed out, God is never directly mentioned by name in the book of Esther, but I think chapter 6, verse 13 is one of the clearest references to God. 

Zeresh warns Haman that because Mordecai is a Jew, he cannot stand against him.  Some scholars believe this shows a belief that the Jewish people were undefeatable, and perhaps even an understanding on some level that the God of the Jews was the living, true God. 

God didn't let Haman harm Mordecai; he returned and rescued him, even rewarding him in the end, because Mordecai belongs to God. 

The good news for us is that this didn't end in the Old Testament; God still rescues, redeems, and returns today. God's love and favor are a free gift of grace that we can receive only by giving up living for ourselves and accepting the Lordship of Christ over every aspect of our lives.  There are so many beautiful stories in the Old Testament that show us, even today, how truly good God's Lordship is and what blessings he has in store for those who submit to it. 

Father, thank you for stories like Esther that not only entertain us and bring us joy but also teach us so much about you!  I pray that each person who reads this will come to find the overwhelming joy that comes only from fully submitting to your authority in our lives and standing firm in our faith in the face of all the world throws at us. Father, as a mother of many daughters, I thank you for your special love for your own daughters, including me, and for giving us such wonderful examples and role models in your word. Amen.

Los versículos de hoy incluyen todo el capítulo 6 de Ester, que en mi traducción lleva el título: “Mardoqueo es honrado”.

En los últimos días, aprendimos la historia detrás de por qué Mardoqueo y Amán se odiaban tanto: era una tradición familiar de larga data. Hasta este punto, Amán parece haber tenido la ventaja debido a su posición de poder, y no ha tenido ningún problema en abusar de su influencia sobre el rey. Al comienzo de este capítulo, incluso está conspirando para que Mardoqueo sea colgado. Pero Dios nunca deja las cosas a medias, y aún no ha terminado con Mardoqueo.

Allá en el capítulo 2, Mardoqueo salvó la vida del rey al descubrir un complot de asesinato, y aunque nunca recibió ninguna recompensa, sus hechos quedaron escritos en los registros del rey. Avancemos al capítulo 6, donde el rey no puede dormir, así que decide que le lean esos mismos registros como una relajante historia antes de dormir.

Cuando se da cuenta de que simplemente se le había olvidado recompensar a Mardoqueo, le pregunta a Amán, de manera indirecta, qué recompensa debería darse. Amán, pensando egoístamente que esa recompensa era para él, expresa sus deseos más profundos, solo para que todo se vuelva en su contra. De repente, él termina siendo quien guía el caballo de Mardoqueo y proclama honores al hombre judío que tanto odia.

Cuando finalmente todo termina, Amán corre a casa lleno de vergüenza y enojo, y se desahoga con su esposa. Ella había sido una instigadora astuta de los planes de Amán todo el tiempo, pero esta vez le advierte.

Como otros han señalado, Dios nunca es mencionado directamente por nombre en el libro de Ester, pero creo que el capítulo 6, versículo 13, es una de las referencias más claras a Dios.

Zeres le advierte a Amán que, debido a que Mardoqueo es judío, no podrá mantenerse en pie contra él. Algunos estudiosos creen que esto muestra una creencia de que el pueblo judío era invencible, y quizá incluso un entendimiento, en cierto nivel, de que el Dios de los judíos era el Dios vivo y verdadero.

Dios no permitió que Amán dañara a Mardoqueo. Volvió a intervenir y lo rescató, incluso recompensándolo al final, porque Mardoqueo le pertenece a Dios.

La buena noticia para nosotros es que esto no terminó en el Antiguo Testamento. Dios todavía rescata, redime y restaura hoy. El amor y el favor de Dios son un regalo gratuito de gracia que solo podemos recibir al dejar de vivir para nosotros mismos y aceptar el señorío de Cristo sobre cada aspecto de nuestra vida. Hay tantas historias hermosas en el Antiguo Testamento que nos muestran, incluso hoy, cuán verdaderamente bueno es el señorío de Dios y qué bendiciones tiene preparadas para quienes se someten a Él.

Padre, gracias por historias como Ester, que no solo nos entretienen y nos traen gozo, sino que también nos enseñan tanto acerca de Ti. Oro para que cada persona que lea esto llegue a encontrar el gozo abrumador que solo viene de someterse plenamente a Tu autoridad en nuestra vida y de mantenerse firme en la fe frente a todo lo que el mundo nos lance. Padre, como madre de muchas hijas, te agradezco por Tu amor especial hacia Tus propias hijas, incluida yo, y por darnos ejemplos y modelos tan maravillosos en Tu Palabra. Amén.
