Ezra|Esther|Nehemiah - Ezra 7:11-28 - June 21, 2026

Dearest heavenly Father. Forgive us. We lay ourselves on you mercy today, confessing we are inclined to sin. Thank you from our deepest parts for your grace and delightful attention. We ask you to help us grasp and hold to who you say we are. Be undeniable and beautiful in our minds, hearts, and worlds today, Holy Spirit. Hug us tight to you today, Father!

Proverbs 21:1 - The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.

Ezra 7:27-28 - 27  Blessed be the Lord, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king, to beautify the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem,  28  and who extended to me his steadfast love before the king and his counselors, and before all the king's mighty officers. I took courage, for the hand of the Lord my God was on me, and I gathered leading men from Israel to go up with me.

Time finally arrived. Israel's captivity and exile in Babylon were over. Israel is being sent home. Over many years, Israel was sent in waves by Persian and Assyrian kings to restore the worship, the temple, and the walls of Jerusalem. Ezra was tasked with leading God's people in restoring their connection to God and the proper functioning of the temple in Jerusalem. Each commissioned wave produced mixed results.

What stands out to me in the accounts of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther is the powerful truth of Proverbs 21:1: Why are kings taking the cause of the people of Israel? Why would a King or world leader consider my cause? The answer that makes sense to my life experience is that God orchestrated it.

Preparing for today's devotion, I found myself questioning how I view my calling to spread the Gospel and to prepare for the coming of the kingdom of heaven. God is actively directing the hearts and actions of the major leaders of men throughout history to this moment, preparing the way for his kingdom on Earth and in Eternity after that. Am I Mephibosheth resisting the invitation to sit at the king's table (2 Samuel 9)? What do I need to change in my belief and thinking to ask, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?!" like young King David?

Ezra took on a great and honorable task. He followed through on a commission from God, equipped by King Darius. The mission was amazing. Ezra did his part. Granted, the full account has an odd ending with dissolving marriages to non-Israelites as a condition to stay in Jerusalem. Still, the main point in the story is bold obedience to God and God's amazing faithfulness and provision for Israel.

Thank you, Father, for your care, patience, and mighty provision. We are emboldened and have lasting peace from this record of your faithfulness to Ezra and your children today. Amen.

Queridísimo Padre celestial, perdónanos. Hoy nos apoyamos en Tu misericordia, confesando que somos inclinados al pecado. Te damos gracias desde lo más profundo de nuestro ser por Tu gracia y por Tu hermosa atención hacia nosotros. Te pedimos que nos ayudes a comprender y aferrarnos a lo que Tú dices que somos. Sé innegable y hermoso en nuestras mentes, corazones y mundos hoy, Espíritu Santo. ¡Abrázanos fuerte a Ti hoy, Padre!

Proverbios 21:1 – El corazón del rey es como un arroyo de agua en la mano del Señor; Él lo dirige hacia donde quiere.

Esdras 7:27–28 – Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de nuestros padres, que puso en el corazón del rey algo así, para hermosear la casa del Señor que está en Jerusalén, y que extendió hacia mí Su amor constante delante del rey, de sus consejeros y de todos los poderosos oficiales del rey. Cobré ánimo, porque la mano del Señor mi Dios estaba sobre mí, y reuní a algunos hombres principales de Israel para que subieran conmigo.

Finalmente llegó el momento. La cautividad y el exilio de Israel en Babilonia habían terminado. Israel estaba siendo enviado de regreso a casa. A lo largo de muchos años, Israel fue enviado en diferentes oleadas por reyes persas y asirios para restaurar la adoración, el templo y los muros de Jerusalén. Esdras recibió la tarea de guiar al pueblo de Dios en la restauración de su conexión con Dios y del funcionamiento adecuado del templo en Jerusalén. Cada oleada comisionada produjo resultados mixtos.

Lo que más me llama la atención en los relatos de Esdras, Nehemías y Ester es la poderosa verdad de Proverbios 21:1: ¿Por qué los reyes toman la causa del pueblo de Israel? ¿Por qué un rey o líder mundial consideraría mi causa? La respuesta que tiene sentido según mi experiencia de vida es que Dios lo orquestó.

Al prepararme para el devocional de hoy, me encontré cuestionando cómo veo mi llamado a compartir el evangelio y a prepararme para la venida del reino de los cielos. Dios está dirigiendo activamente los corazones y las acciones de los grandes líderes de la humanidad a lo largo de la historia hasta este momento, preparando el camino para Su reino en la tierra y, después, en la eternidad. ¿Soy yo como Mefi-boset, resistiéndome a la invitación de sentarme a la mesa del rey (2 Samuel 9)? ¿Qué necesito cambiar en mi manera de creer y pensar para preguntar, como el joven rey David: “¿Quién es este filisteo incircunciso para desafiar a los ejércitos del Dios viviente?”?

Esdras asumió una tarea grande y honorable. Cumplió una comisión de Dios, equipado por el rey Darío. La misión era asombrosa. Esdras hizo su parte. Es cierto que el relato completo tiene un final extraño, con la disolución de matrimonios con mujeres no israelitas como condición para permanecer en Jerusalén. Aun así, el punto principal de la historia es la obediencia valiente a Dios y la asombrosa fidelidad y provisión de Dios para Israel.

Gracias, Padre, por Tu cuidado, paciencia y poderosa provisión. Somos animados y recibimos una paz duradera por este registro de Tu fidelidad hacia Esdras y hacia Tus hijos hoy. Amén.
