Daily Word of Encouragement 6.27.25 - Brendan Doonan

Teachings of Jesus - Matthew 24:36-44 - June 27, 2025 

Today, we read something that seems almost unfathomable: that Christ himself doesn't know the hour of his return. How can this be? If Christ is God and God is all-knowing, how can he not know when he will return? 

In Hebrews 8:11, we read, "For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." God willfully gives up his knowledge of our past sins. Motivated by his mercy and love toward mankind. 

Similarly, Christ willfully chooses to bring all things, including knowledge, into submission to his Father. Not because he is lesser but because he is the perfect example of submission. 

The last verse in our passage reads, "Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." (v.44) . Christ encourages us to stay awake. 

How can we be ready? 

Step 1: Joyfully look forward to Christ's return 

One of the ways you will naturally prepare for something is if you look forward to it. On the contrary, if you are dreading the idea of visiting your conspiracy theory-spewing uncle, you may naturally find yourself procrastinating on preparing to see him. So, if you can see that Christ's return is a good thing, something to look forward to, being ready and living in the light of eternity will come naturally. This is obviously easier said than done, but adopting this mindset can be a significant step in preparing for Christ's return. 

Step 2: Realize what you won't be missing 

If the idea of Christ returning tomorrow makes you feel like you are missing out on all the great plans you have for the future, then you are misunderstanding his return. The cliché of the young person praying for Christ's return while also asking God to wait until they can find a spouse is a humorous illustration of how we can miss the point of the kingdom of heaven coming to earth. The reality of all of the joy we look forward to experiencing in a relationship will be found in Christ's return. The error is thinking that certain good things can only be found on this earth. If you believe this, you can find yourself clinging to things on this earth, and something good can actually lead you to sin. But if you are ready to let that good thing go, even more of the good part of it can be found in Christ and his kingdom. 

In conclusion, if we focus on the goodness of Christ's return, we can begin to live our days ready for it. 

Palabra diaria de aliento basada en la lectura de hoy

Hoy leemos algo que parece casi incomprensible: que el mismo Cristo no sabe la hora de su regreso. ¿Cómo puede ser esto? Si Cristo es Dios y Dios es omnisciente, ¿cómo puede no saber cuándo regresará? 

  En Hebreos 8:11 leemos: «Porque seré propicio a sus iniquidades, y no me acordaré más de sus pecados». Dios renuncia voluntariamente a su conocimiento de nuestros pecados pasados, motivado por su misericordia y amor hacia la humanidad. 

De manera similar, Cristo elige voluntariamente someter todas las cosas, incluido el conocimiento, a su Padre. No porque sea inferior, sino porque es el ejemplo perfecto de la sumisión. 

  El último versículo de nuestro pasaje dice: «Por lo tanto, también vosotros estad preparados, porque el Hijo del Hombre vendrá a la hora que no pensáis» (v. 44). Cristo nos anima a permanecer despiertos. 

¿Cómo podemos estar preparados? 

Paso 1: Esperar con alegría el regreso de Cristo 

Una de las formas naturales de prepararse para algo es esperarlo con ilusión. Por el contrario, si te da miedo visitar a tu tío, que siempre está contando teorías conspirativas, es natural que procrastines a la hora de prepararte para verlo. Por lo tanto, si ves que el regreso de Cristo es algo bueno, algo que esperar con ilusión, estar preparado y vivir a la luz de la eternidad te resultará natural. Obviamente, es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, pero adoptar esta mentalidad puede ser un paso importante en la preparación para el regreso de Cristo. 

  Paso 2: Date cuenta de lo que no te perderás 

Si la idea de que Cristo regrese mañana te hace sentir que te estás perdiendo todos los grandes planes que tienes para el futuro, entonces estás malinterpretando su regreso. El cliché del joven que reza por el regreso de Cristo y al mismo tiempo le pide a Dios que espere hasta que encuentre pareja es una ilustración humorística de cómo podemos perdernos el sentido de la llegada del reino de los cielos a la tierra. La realidad de toda la alegría que esperamos experimentar en una relación se encontrará en el regreso de Cristo. El error es pensar que ciertas cosas buenas solo se pueden encontrar en esta tierra. Si crees esto, puedes encontrarte aferrándote a las cosas de esta tierra, y algo bueno puede llevarte al pecado. Pero si estás listo para dejar ir eso bueno, aún más de lo bueno se puede encontrar en Cristo y su reino. 

  En conclusión, si nos centramos en la bondad del regreso de Cristo, podemos empezar a vivir nuestros días preparados para ello.
