Daily Word of Encouragement 6.27.26 - Kitty Jones

Ezra|Esther|Nehemiah - Nehemiah 3-4 - June 27, 2026

Today, our devotion comes from Nehemiah 3-4 where the returnees to Jerusalem attempt to reconstruct the protective wall around the city but face serious opposition. Some of the workers were able to build near their own homes, which certainly would contribute to the sincerity of their efforts. Others built sections of the wall as needed, but always they worked right next to one another, for protection. They faced significant opposition and presented a united front to their enemies.

Neh. 3:5 tells us there was unrest even among the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem. The noblemen who had come from Tekoa “would not put their shoulders to the work…” It is thought they may have jealously resented Nehemiah’s leadership, thinking they could do a better job.

Opposition from outside the Jewish community escalated as Sanballat and Tobiah ridiculed the wall-building efforts and threatened to stop the work. In response, the people of Judah prayed to God and posted guards day & night. Half the men worked on the wall and the other half stood by with weapons of warfare, ready to fight. That reminds me of a WW2 chaplain’s words as he manned a ship’s gun turret with these words: “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!”

It is questionable whether Sanballat and Tobiah saw themselves as Israelites, with any kind of rightful claim to Jerusalem and the surrounding land. But we might be able to see a correlation. As redeemed children of Almighty God, we sometimes face opposition even from those “within the ranks” who attend church with us. When this opposition becomes apparent to those within the church, confusion results. They can rightfully question: “If God is all about loving your fellow Christian, why are they fighting amongst themselves?” When people outside the church hear of “church fights”, they conclude “those people are no different than anyone else; they treat each other badly.

When we remain convinced of the importance of God’s truth revealed in Scripture, there will be opposition from those who disagree with the way we see it. Can we make room for fellow Believers to reach conclusions that differ from ours? I sure hope so, because none of us has any kind of “final say” regarding the Scriptures. We simply need to study, pray and obey what the Holy Spirit reveals – whether or not it agrees with everyone else in our church, or in the larger Christian world.

Hoy nuestro devocional viene de Nehemías 3–4, donde los que regresaron a Jerusalén intentan reconstruir el muro protector alrededor de la ciudad, pero enfrentan una oposición seria. Algunos de los trabajadores pudieron construir cerca de sus propias casas, lo cual ciertamente contribuiría a la sinceridad de sus esfuerzos. Otros construyeron las secciones del muro según la necesidad, pero siempre trabajaban unos junto a otros para protegerse. Enfrentaron una oposición significativa y presentaron un frente unido ante sus enemigos.

Nehemías 3:5 nos dice que había inquietud incluso entre los judíos que habían regresado a Jerusalén. Los nobles que habían venido de Tecoa “no quisieron poner el hombro a la obra…”. Se piensa que quizá resentían celosamente el liderazgo de Nehemías, creyendo que ellos podían hacer un mejor trabajo.

La oposición desde fuera de la comunidad judía aumentó cuando Sanbalat y Tobías ridiculizaron los esfuerzos de construcción del muro y amenazaron con detener la obra. En respuesta, el pueblo de Judá oró a Dios y puso guardias de día y de noche. La mitad de los hombres trabajaba en el muro y la otra mitad permanecía lista con armas de guerra, preparada para pelear. Eso me recuerda las palabras de un capellán de la Segunda Guerra Mundial mientras manejaba la torreta de un barco: “¡Alaben al Señor y pasen las municiones!”.

Es cuestionable si Sanbalat y Tobías se veían a sí mismos como israelitas, con algún tipo de derecho legítimo sobre Jerusalén y la tierra circundante. Pero quizá podamos ver una correlación. Como hijos redimidos del Dios Todopoderoso, a veces enfrentamos oposición incluso de aquellos “dentro de las filas” que asisten a la iglesia con nosotros. Cuando esta oposición se hace evidente dentro de la iglesia, resulta en confusión. Las personas pueden preguntar con razón: “Si Dios se trata de amar a tu hermano cristiano, ¿por qué están peleando entre ellos?”. Cuando las personas fuera de la iglesia escuchan de “peleas en la iglesia”, concluyen: “Esa gente no es diferente a nadie más; se tratan mal unos a otros”.

Cuando permanecemos convencidos de la importancia de la verdad de Dios revelada en las Escrituras, habrá oposición de aquellos que no están de acuerdo con la manera en que la entendemos. ¿Podemos hacer espacio para que otros creyentes lleguen a conclusiones diferentes a las nuestras? De verdad espero que sí, porque ninguno de nosotros tiene la “última palabra” con respecto a las Escrituras. Simplemente necesitamos estudiar, orar y obedecer lo que el Espíritu Santo revela, esté o no de acuerdo con todos los demás en nuestra iglesia o en el mundo cristiano en general.
