Ezra|Esther|Nehemiah - Nehemiah 5-6 - June 28, 2026

Nehemiah 6:15-16 - “So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.”

Have you ever built a lego set before? Or maybe you've spent hours putting together a piece of IKEA furniture. If you have then you know that joy and relief that comes when you put that final piece together. In today’s passage we read in the book of Nehemiah that in just 52 days, the Israelites were able to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Prior to this the Israelites had faced danger and shame without its walls as it says in Nehemiah 2:17, “Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” I’m sure that the Israelites were both relieved and joyful that God had helped them restore the walls of their city. But what was the significance of this? The rebuilding of the walls was important for three reasons:

1. The rebuilding of the walls would show God’s blessing upon his chosen people again. After having experienced judgment for their sins and exile, God restored and returned them back to the Promise Land. In Nehemiah 1:9, Nehemiah quotes God’s words to Moses in his prayer, “If you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name”

2. Rebuilding the walls was a powerful sign to the enemies of Israel not to mess with them. In Nehemiah 2:20 Nehemiah says, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.”

3. Lastly the rebuilding of the walls showed that God was with his people and he helped them accomplish this feat. “And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem, for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.” Nehemiah 6:15-16

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem shows us that God is faithful to his people and that we can trust that he is faithful to his promises. It also shows that nothing can get in the way of God’s good plans.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that you are always faithful to us even when we are unfaithful to you. Thank you that nothing can stop you and your good plans. You are a mighty and awesome God! Thank you for your Word. Amen.

Nehemías 6:15–16 – “Así fue terminado el muro el día veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días. Y cuando todos nuestros enemigos lo oyeron, todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros tuvieron miedo y se sintieron muy humilladas, porque reconocieron que esta obra había sido realizada con la ayuda de nuestro Dios”.

¿Alguna vez has armado un set de Lego? O quizá has pasado horas armando un mueble de IKEA. Si lo has hecho, entonces conoces ese gozo y alivio que llega cuando finalmente colocas la última pieza. En el pasaje de hoy leemos en el libro de Nehemías que, en solo 52 días, los israelitas pudieron reconstruir los muros de Jerusalén. Antes de esto, los israelitas habían enfrentado peligro y vergüenza sin sus muros, como dice Nehemías 2:17: “Entonces les dije: ‘Ustedes ven la mala situación en que estamos, cómo Jerusalén está en ruinas y sus puertas quemadas. Vengan, reconstruyamos el muro de Jerusalén, para que ya no seamos objeto de burla’”. Estoy seguro de que los israelitas estaban tanto aliviados como gozosos de que Dios los hubiera ayudado a restaurar los muros de su ciudad. Pero ¿cuál era el significado de esto? La reconstrucción de los muros era importante por tres razones:

1. La reconstrucción de los muros mostraría nuevamente la bendición de Dios sobre Su pueblo escogido.
Después de haber experimentado juicio por sus pecados y exilio, Dios los restauró y los hizo regresar a la Tierra Prometida. En Nehemías 1:9, Nehemías cita las palabras de Dios a Moisés en su oración: “Si vuelven a Mí y obedecen Mis mandamientos, aunque sus exiliados estén en el extremo más lejano del horizonte, desde allí los reuniré y los traeré al lugar que he escogido como morada para Mi Nombre”.

2. Reconstruir los muros era una señal poderosa para los enemigos de Israel de que no debían meterse con ellos.
En Nehemías 2:20, Nehemías dice: “El Dios de los cielos nos dará éxito. Nosotros, Sus siervos, comenzaremos a reconstruir; pero ustedes no tienen parte en Jerusalén, ni derecho, ni reclamo histórico sobre ella”.

3. Por último, la reconstrucción de los muros mostró que Dios estaba con Su pueblo y que Él los ayudó a lograr esta hazaña.
“Y cuando todos nuestros enemigos lo oyeron, todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros tuvieron miedo y se sintieron muy humilladas, porque reconocieron que esta obra había sido realizada con la ayuda de nuestro Dios” (Nehemías 6:15–16).

La reconstrucción de los muros de Jerusalén nos muestra que Dios es fiel a Su pueblo y que podemos confiar en que Él es fiel a Sus promesas. También muestra que nada puede interponerse en el camino de los buenos planes de Dios.

Querido Padre celestial, gracias porque siempre eres fiel a nosotros, aun cuando nosotros somos infieles a Ti. Gracias porque nada puede detenerte a Ti ni a Tus buenos planes. ¡Tú eres un Dios poderoso y maravilloso! Gracias por Tu Palabra. Amén.
