Ezra|Esther|Nehemiah - Ezra 5:1-17 - June 7, 2026

The book of Ezra reflects God's power in covenant faithfulness, moving even pagan kings to accomplish his redemptive purposes. The end of chapter 4 shows that the work on the temple has stopped. Yet, in chapter 5, through the encouragement of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the rebuilding continued … even with another adversary, Tattenai, the governor of the province.

What I would like to draw our attention to this morning is verse 5: "But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until the report should reach Darius and then an answer be returned by letter concerning it."

The elders desired to continue construction, even though they had, yet again, another adversary questioning the project. The investigation would prove that there was indeed a letter authorizing the rebuilding. God's watchful eye is far-sighted, seeing well beyond our current circumstances, as we seek to do His will. Ps. 33:18 - "Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love."

In 1905, while in Elmira, NY, Civilla Martin and her husband, evangelist Walter Stillman Martin, met Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle, a couple who lived with severe physical disabilities. Despite being bedridden for nearly 20 years, Mrs. Doolittle maintained a joyful, faithful attitude. When asked how they maintained their optimism, Mrs. Doolittle replied, "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." Deeply moved, Civilla Martin wrote the poem's lyrics that same day, which was later set to music by composer Charles H. Gabriel.

"I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free.

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me."

Please know, dear friends, that no matter the circumstances of life, God's eye is upon you. He does not blink. No matter what you are going through, pain, sorrow, loneliness … or joy and abundance, He cares for you. 

So, in your own heart, sing today …

"I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free.

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me."

El libro de Esdras refleja el poder de Dios en Su fidelidad al pacto, moviendo incluso a reyes paganos para cumplir Sus propósitos redentores. El final del capítulo 4 muestra que la obra del templo se había detenido. Sin embargo, en el capítulo 5, por medio del ánimo de los profetas Hageo y Zacarías, la reconstrucción continuó, aun con otro adversario: Tatnai, el gobernador de la provincia.

Lo que quisiera destacar esta mañana es el versículo 5: “Pero el ojo de su Dios estaba sobre los ancianos de los judíos, y no los detuvieron hasta que el informe llegara a Darío y luego se recibiera una respuesta por carta acerca del asunto”.

Los ancianos deseaban continuar la construcción, aunque nuevamente tenían otro adversario cuestionando el proyecto. La investigación demostraría que, en efecto, existía una carta que autorizaba la reconstrucción. El ojo vigilante de Dios ve mucho más allá de nuestras circunstancias actuales mientras buscamos hacer Su voluntad. Salmo 33:18 dice: “He aquí, el ojo del Señor está sobre los que le temen, sobre los que esperan en Su misericordia”.

En 1905, mientras estaban en Elmira, Nueva York, Civilla Martin y su esposo, el evangelista Walter Stillman Martin, conocieron al señor y la señora Doolittle, una pareja que vivía con severas discapacidades físicas. A pesar de haber estado postrada en cama durante casi 20 años, la señora Doolittle mantenía una actitud gozosa y fiel. Cuando le preguntaron cómo mantenían su optimismo, la señora Doolittle respondió: “Su ojo está sobre el gorrión, y sé que Él me cuida”. Profundamente conmovida, Civilla Martin escribió ese mismo día la letra del poema, que luego fue musicalizado por el compositor Charles H. Gabriel.

“Canto porque soy feliz,
canto porque soy libre.
Su ojo está sobre el gorrión,
y sé que Él me cuida”.

Por favor sepan, queridos amigos, que sin importar las circunstancias de la vida, el ojo de Dios está sobre ustedes. Él no parpadea. No importa por lo que estés pasando: dolor, tristeza, soledad… o gozo y abundancia, Él cuida de ti.

Así que hoy, en tu propio corazón, canta:

“Canto porque soy feliz,
canto porque soy libre.
Su ojo está sobre el gorrión,
y sé que Él me cuida”.
