Being a Healthy Christian - Psalm 1 - July 11, 2026

Psalm 1 - "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.  But his delight is in the law of the Lord,  and on his law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water,  which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.  Whatever he does prospers.  Not so the wicked!  They are like chaff that the wind blows away.  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,  nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.  For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,  but the way of the wicked will perish." 

All of us want a life of satisfaction and blessings, but are we willing to do what it takes to have one? We can't wish for this life; we are to live it out. We have to be rooted in God just as a tree is rooted in the ground. In a storm, we don't see trees flying out of the ground in full; most of the time, they bend or break in the middle. But the stump remains because it stays rooted in the one thing that will not fly away-the ground. This is a picture of how we are to be rooted in God: the deeper the better. With a tree firmly planted, its roots will continue to take up water and nutrients deep in the soil. That is why the blessings in verse 3 say that "those who delight in the Law of the Lord" are like trees.

So what does it mean to delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night? It simply means this: we, as Christians, are to read the Bible continually and seek to know what it means. This means praying over it, thinking about it, memorizing it, talking to others about it, reading a commentary,  listening to a message on it, and asking God to work it out or apply it in our lives. This is a Psalm about influence; if we are influenced by the Word of God rather than influenced by the wicked, we will grow more in Him and live the life He desires for us.

The prosperity in verse 3 can include material blessings, but not necessarily. Rather, the word blessed could be replaced with "joyful". If we are truly rooted in God and His Word, even when the storm comes, we will be nourished by the Lord and remain stable in Him. Note that Psalm One represents a general principle and not a guarantee. The wicked may prosper for a time, and the godly may suffer pain and hardship in this life, but in the end, it is God who will judge all of us. The righteous will remain standing and receive final vindication before God, while the wicked will face final destruction. Verses 4-6 show that this is a Psalm of contrasts because a clear distinction is drawn between the righteous and the wicked. The wicked refers to those who are not part of Christ and His Church and live a life away from God.

Father God, I pray for those who are called "wicked", that you may guide all of them off such a path and lead them to the everlasting life only you provide. Lord, I also pray for those who are called "righteous" that they may continue to walk your path and place their full trust in you. AMEN!

Salmo 1 – “Bienaventurado el hombre que no anda en el consejo de los impíos, ni se detiene en el camino de los pecadores, ni se sienta en la silla de los burladores. Sino que en la ley del Señor está su deleite, y en Su ley medita de día y de noche. Será como árbol plantado junto a corrientes de agua, que da su fruto a su tiempo y cuya hoja no se marchita. Todo lo que hace prospera. ¡No así los impíos! Son como la paja que se lleva el viento. Por tanto, los impíos no se levantarán en el juicio, ni los pecadores en la congregación de los justos. Porque el Señor conoce el camino de los justos, pero el camino de los impíos perecerá”.

Todos queremos una vida de satisfacción y bendiciones, pero ¿estamos dispuestos a hacer lo necesario para tenerla? No podemos simplemente desear esta vida; debemos vivirla. Tenemos que estar arraigados en Dios, así como un árbol está arraigado en la tierra. En una tormenta, no vemos árboles enteros saliendo volando del suelo; la mayoría de las veces se doblan o se quiebran por la mitad. Pero el tronco permanece porque está arraigado en aquello que no saldrá volando: la tierra. Esta es una imagen de cómo debemos estar arraigados en Dios: cuanto más profundo, mejor. Con un árbol firmemente plantado, sus raíces seguirán absorbiendo agua y nutrientes en lo profundo del suelo. Por eso las bendiciones del versículo 3 dicen que “los que se deleitan en la ley del Señor” son como árboles.

Entonces, ¿qué significa deleitarse en la ley del Señor y meditar en ella de día y de noche? Simplemente significa esto: nosotros, como cristianos, debemos leer la Biblia continuamente y buscar entender lo que significa. Esto implica orar sobre ella, pensar en ella, memorizarla, hablar con otros acerca de ella, leer un comentario, escuchar un mensaje sobre ella y pedirle a Dios que la haga realidad o la aplique en nuestra vida. Este es un salmo sobre la influencia; si somos influenciados por la Palabra de Dios en lugar de ser influenciados por los impíos, creceremos más en Él y viviremos la vida que Él desea para nosotros.

La prosperidad del versículo 3 puede incluir bendiciones materiales, pero no necesariamente. Más bien, la palabra bienaventurado podría reemplazarse por “gozoso”. Si estamos verdaderamente arraigados en Dios y en Su Palabra, aun cuando venga la tormenta, seremos nutridos por el Señor y permaneceremos firmes en Él. Nota que el Salmo 1 representa un principio general y no una garantía. Los impíos pueden prosperar por un tiempo, y los piadosos pueden sufrir dolor y dificultad en esta vida, pero al final, es Dios quien nos juzgará a todos. Los justos permanecerán firmes y recibirán la vindicación final delante de Dios, mientras que los impíos enfrentarán la destrucción final. Los versículos 4–6 muestran que este es un salmo de contrastes, porque se traza una clara distinción entre los justos y los impíos. Los impíos se refiere a aquellos que no forman parte de Cristo y Su Iglesia, y que viven una vida apartada de Dios.

Padre Dios, oro por aquellos que son llamados “impíos”, para que Tú los guíes a todos fuera de ese camino y los conduzcas a la vida eterna que solo Tú provees. Señor, también oro por aquellos que son llamados “justos”, para que continúen caminando por Tu senda y pongan toda su confianza en Ti. ¡AMÉN!
