Daily Word of Encouragement 7.1.26 - Julian Marcel

Being a Healthy Christian - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - July 1, 2026
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
*Internal thoughts - “Okay, Julian, you have to write about the importance of physical health today. That means you have to put down the energy drinks and the Takis for a minute. That means you’re about to feel convicted about poor diet, lackluster sleep habits, and the amount of money you’re wasting on your gym membership. Here goes nothing.”
If my internal dialogue resonates with you at all, I’m glad I’m not alone. Physical health and well-being is probably the single biggest area of neglect in my personal life - and I am here to confess that openly. I am still a boy at heart who loves sugar and relaxing (I mean, who doesn’t?), and so, I need this devotion.
The truth is that God created us - both body and soul. It is really easy for me to focus on soul care; I’m employed as a pastor after all. I have studied spiritual disciplines, understand the importance of healthy spiritual habits, and so on. But when it comes to the physical body that God gave me, I have some serious work to do.
One of the heresies prevalent in the Early Church was Gnosticism. This belief essentially deemed everything physical inherently bad and taught that true freedom lies in escaping the physical world altogether. This is blatantly unbiblical. God cares very much about the physical world - including our physical bodies - after all, He made them. Salvation and eternal life will not be found in shedding the physical, but in the physical being glorified like Christ. Jesus rose from the dead as a physical man - and so will we. And so, in the meantime, we are commanded to take care of the bodies that God has given us.
Let’s look at 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 for a minute:
Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Israelites of the Old Testament spent countless hours and considerable money making the temple beautiful. After all, it was God’s house. So, we need to take the responsibility of caring for our own bodies seriously as well. For us who believe, the Holy Spirit takes residence in us, and we must take care of His temple.
Our body has been bought with a price. Not only did God make us, but He also saved us. Through the loving sacrifice of Jesus, our bodies too are on the road to redemption. God cares about ALL of what makes us us, including our bodies.
We are commanded to glorify God with our bodies. This means that we need to prioritize a healthy diet, exercise, good sleep, and other habits. ALSO - it means that we are to use the physical bodies that God has given us to glorify Him. This means we are actively serving, worshiping, loving, etc., in tangible ways.
As we kick off this month, we need to know this simple truth: God cares about our entire being. There is not a sphere of our lives that can go untouched by the Gospel. Every area of our lives needs to be ordered after the Word of God and taken seriously. So, I permit you to ask me about my diet and exercise habits if you see me - I need the accountability.
