.Being a Healthy Christian - 1 Peter 5:6-11- July 17, 2026

Today’s devotion comes from first Peter, and I have the privilege of talking a little about what emotional health as a Christian looks like. I’ve been blessed over the last week to spend a lot of time out on a lake paddle boarding.  I’ve been able to practice moving from sitting to kneeling to standing, balancing a two year old on the board with me, and for some reason when I’m out in the middle of the water my thoughts are so much more clear.

I’ve been asking God why he would want me to tackle the topic of emotional health when I struggle so much with my own!  However,  knowing that he had placed these struggles in my life for my good and his glory, I prayerfully ask that he use me now to hopefully speak into the heart of someone who also struggles.  Something that paddle board taught me is that stability feels good, and instability feels icky.  Whether it’s mental, emotional, financial or even the  physical instability of a restless toddler on what’s essentially a plastic bag filled with air in the middle of the lake it’s not comfortable.

I’ve had a terrible temper all my life and my emotional instability has taken a toll on many around me. My patient and forgiving husband can be my witness.  When my emotions build up inside me it’s like pressure building up in a volcano and when the mind volcano explodes I say and do things that I’m not proud of, things I don’t really mean and things I know are not pleasing to God.  When the mental lava cools I’m filled with shame and regret.  It’s a vicious cycle because the shame causes me to try to stuff the emotions down even harder next time, resulting in more pressure and an even bigger explosion.

But Peter gives us some good counsel in his first letter.  He advises us to be humble and instead of keeping everything to ourselves, take our anxieties to God.  It was never God's plan for us to try to balance all the instabilities in our lives ourselves. He created us to lean on him- it’s only when we try to lean away that we become unstable.  Peter also reminds us that the God who designed us to lean on him is the God of all grace, and that same God has called us to eternal glory.  His grace is freely available to us, no strings attached, when we submit our lives to him.  I think of submission not like being a doormat and submitting to any way anyone wants to treat you, but like submitting an application.  I think it through, I hand it over, and then it’s quite literally out of my hands.  If I tried to hold on to that application it would never be read and approved, it couldn’t because my needy claws won’t give it up!  I only learned through wise counsel from Christian friends and time spent in the word that God doesn’t expect every aspect of my life to be perfectly balanced, in fact I’ve become convinced over the last few years that God sends instabilities to me to force me to lean back on him when I start to lean away!  Even when every aspect of my life feels likely to tip me over into the freezing water at any moment i can find comfort in knowing that I can lean on God for the stability I crave and that even if I do end up in the water it might end up feeling great!

Father, thank you for the blessings of your beautiful works in nature we are so privileged to experienced.  Thank you for being the firm foundation we can build our lives on and the pilar of strength we can lean on when things get shakey.  Help us all to remember to lean into you and not the world, the devil or our own sinful flesh.  I sincerely ask that you bring peace to the hearts experiencing any kind of instability in their lives and strengthen them to seek out the aid of fellow believers for wise counsel.  Thank you for your word and the answers we find in it.

Amen
