Being a Healthy Christian - Galatians 5:16-26 - July 24, 2026
I once heard Paul's letter to the Roman province of Galatia described as a sort of 1st-century 911 Call.
Through missionaries like Paul, Christianity grew from Jerusalem into the surrounding areas, including Galatia, which spanned modern-day Turkey. God blessed Paul's missionary work, and as a result, multi-ethnic Christian communities grew in the region. Quickly after their establishment, Judaizers arrived and threatened to alter the core of Christ's message. These Jewish Christians were influential and advocated for a strict adherence to the Mosaic laws—including things like adult circumcision, diet, and rituals.
In chapter five of Galatians, Paul addresses an immediate spiritual threat. Had he lived in the 21st century, I believe this letter would have been followed up with a bunch of urgent phone calls to everyone he knew in Galatia. The active danger to the Galatians that prompted Paul into action was the threat of legalism and spiritual bondage to the old law. In the first part of chapter five, Paul describes how the Judaizers stripped the Galatians of their spiritual freedom, and here in verses 16-26, Paul explains the remedy for the problem.
911 operators are trained to give immediate, life-saving instructions to callers to help stabilize victims until more help arrives. Paul is doing the same things for the Galatians in this passage. Not only did the Judaizers hurt the Galatians' spiritual health, but the Mosaic law they endorsed was an ineffective substitute for living a spirit-filled life. Paul tells us that the Galatians must stop relying on their own strength and instead "walk by the Spirit." Simply put, if we walk in the Spirit instead of trying to follow the law, it will change our very nature. Legalists believed that following the law would protect people from sin; but, as Christians, they should have realized that Jesus changed everything. Thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we have the Holy Spirit living inside us.
Paul juxtaposed the Acts of the Flesh with the Fruits of the Spirit to guide the Galatians in living a spirit-filled life, but this was written for us too! To extend the metaphor, Paul, our spiritual health 911 operator, gives us a comparable diagnostic checklist: the Acts of the Flesh versus the Fruits of the Spirit.
What a great assessment for our spiritual health!
American Theologian Dr. James Boice described a Spirit-filled life this way: "Life by the Spirit is neither legalism nor license—nor a middle way between them. It is a life of faith and love that is above all of these false ways."
Dear Lord, thank you for your Word. We pray to be filled with your Holy Spirit in order to turn away from the Acts of the Flesh, to be transformed by your Spirit, and to produce Fruit in accordance with Your Will. Amen.
