Being a Healthy Christian - 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 - July 30, 2026

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 - All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.  Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.  We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Just last weekend, we hosted a movie night over at the Santa Rosa campus.  It was an amazing night of food and fellowship, and everyone there heard the Gospel message and was invited to church.  Our leadership team had a couple of ideas on what movie we would watch, but we ended up landing on the movie Goat, an animated basketball movie.  While we were setting up for the event, one kid from the neighborhood came up and asked about what movie we were watching, and when we told him, his eyes lit up with excitement.  He then asked, “Is it free?”  We responded, “Of course!  And pizza and popcorn are on the house too!”  He was amazed and immediately went to tell his friends about it.

Think about that scene for a minute.  This kid realized the free gift of this movie night and he was compelled to go and share with others.  Isn’t that a great picture of how we should respond to the free gift of the Gospel?  Not only are we recipients of the love, grace, and mercy of God – but we are compelled to go and spread the Word as quickly as possible.  I find that most Christians know that they need to share the Gospel, but struggle to actively do it.  Many times, people will admit that they “used to” have that fire, but it’s died out over time.  What we need to do is channel the excitement that this kid had when he heard about the free movie night.  He had urgency because the movie was going to start in about an hour.  We must have urgency because we never know when life might end or Jesus may come back.  

In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul lays out the case that we are to be ministers of reconciliation, or “ambassadors for Christ.”  In other words, we are God’s spokesperson, preaching the Gospel to those in our path.  Paul grounds this command in the work that Jesus did on our behalf: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor. 5:21)  He makes the argument that because of the love we’ve received from God, we are to share in that same love with others by making known the good news.  

So, what does this have to do with being a “healthy” Christian?  Well, an evidence of spiritual health and vigor is that we have evangelistic urgency.  If we hold the good news in, withhold it from others, and miss the opportunity to share, it is a sign of spiritual sickness.  I say this not to lay guilt at our feet, but to remind us of the command to go and make disciples of all nations.  We have all been given the ministry of reconciliation - God making His appeal through us.  This is not a job reserved for those in vocational ministry.  This is a job assigned to all who are born again.  So, take heart, trust the Lord, and go.  Go with Gospel Intentionality.  Go into the world and live by loving others in the truth.  Identify people in your circle of life who need the Gospel, and don’t worry about the results.  Your job is to simply share the truth and pray that God opens their heart… but do it all in love.

2 Corintios 5:18–20 – Todo esto proviene de Dios, quien por medio de Cristo nos reconcilió consigo mismo y nos dio el ministerio de la reconciliación; es decir, que en Cristo Dios estaba reconciliando al mundo consigo mismo, no tomando en cuenta sus pecados, y nos encargó a nosotros el mensaje de la reconciliación. Por tanto, somos embajadores de Cristo, como si Dios rogara por medio de nosotros. Les suplicamos en nombre de Cristo: reconcíliense con Dios.

El fin de semana pasado, organizamos una noche de película en el campus de Santa Rosa. Fue una noche increíble de comida y compañerismo, y todos los que estuvieron allí escucharon el mensaje del evangelio y fueron invitados a la iglesia. Nuestro equipo de liderazgo tenía un par de ideas sobre qué película veríamos, pero terminamos escogiendo la película Goat, una película animada de baloncesto. Mientras estábamos preparando todo para el evento, un niño del vecindario se acercó y preguntó qué película íbamos a ver. Cuando se lo dijimos, sus ojos se iluminaron de emoción. Luego preguntó: “¿Es gratis?”. Respondimos: “¡Por supuesto! ¡Y la pizza y las palomitas también van por cuenta de la casa!”. Él quedó asombrado e inmediatamente fue a contarles a sus amigos.

Piensa en esa escena por un minuto. Este niño se dio cuenta del regalo gratuito de esa noche de película, y se sintió impulsado a ir y compartirlo con otros. ¿No es esa una gran imagen de cómo deberíamos responder al regalo gratuito del evangelio? No solo somos receptores del amor, la gracia y la misericordia de Dios, sino que somos impulsados a ir y compartir la Palabra lo más pronto posible. Creo que la mayoría de los cristianos saben que necesitan compartir el evangelio, pero les cuesta hacerlo activamente. Muchas veces, las personas admitirán que “antes” tenían ese fuego, pero que con el tiempo se ha apagado. Lo que necesitamos hacer es canalizar la emoción que tenía este niño cuando escuchó acerca de la noche de película gratis. Él tenía urgencia porque la película iba a comenzar en aproximadamente una hora. Nosotros debemos tener urgencia porque nunca sabemos cuándo puede terminar la vida o cuándo Jesús puede regresar.

En 2 Corintios 5, Pablo presenta el argumento de que debemos ser ministros de reconciliación, o “embajadores de Cristo”. En otras palabras, somos portavoces de Dios, predicando el evangelio a aquellos que están en nuestro camino. Pablo fundamenta este mandato en la obra que Jesús hizo a nuestro favor: “Al que no conoció pecado, por nosotros lo hizo pecado, para que en Él llegáramos a ser justicia de Dios” (2 Corintios 5:21). Pablo argumenta que, por causa del amor que hemos recibido de Dios, debemos compartir ese mismo amor con otros dando a conocer las buenas nuevas.

Entonces, ¿qué tiene que ver esto con ser un cristiano “saludable”? Bueno, una evidencia de salud y vigor espiritual es que tenemos urgencia evangelística. Si retenemos las buenas nuevas, se las negamos a otros y perdemos la oportunidad de compartirlas, eso es una señal de enfermedad espiritual. No digo esto para poner culpa sobre nuestros hombros, sino para recordarnos el mandato de ir y hacer discípulos de todas las naciones. A todos se nos ha dado el ministerio de la reconciliación: Dios haciendo Su llamado por medio de nosotros. Este no es un trabajo reservado para quienes están en el ministerio vocacional. Es una tarea asignada a todos los que han nacido de nuevo. Así que cobra ánimo, confía en el Señor y ve. Ve con intencionalidad evangelística. Ve al mundo y vive amando a otros en la verdad. Identifica a las personas en tu círculo de vida que necesitan el evangelio, y no te preocupes por los resultados. Tu tarea es simplemente compartir la verdad y orar para que Dios abra sus corazones… pero hazlo todo en amor.
