Being a Healthy Christian - 1 Timothy 4:7-10 - July 3, 2026
Portions of 1 Timothy 4: 6 and 10 - "Be constantly nourished on the words of faith, and of sound doctrine which you have been following. For it is for this we labor, and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God."
Norma and I have been living in a retirement community for the past two years, and it serves large portions of yummy food. Breakfast is a buffet. Before you get to the table with the bacon, eggs, and potatoes, you have to pass by a table with pastries like scones, donuts, and apple and cherry turnovers. Even though I have tried to discipline myself regarding what I eat, I haven't always passed by that table, and I have gained 13 pounds. In the midst of this weight gain, I started going to the exercise room at least five mornings a week and making the rounds of the equipment. This discipline has been HARD, because I have never been an exercise type of person. My only exercise while I was on the staff at Hessel Church was my brisk 124-step walk from the fellowship hall to the worship center several times a week!!!
Staying in shape spiritually can also be a challenge. In 1 Timothy 4:10, we read that even when our eyes are fixed on God, fulfilling our spiritual desires requires faithful discipline. This is because, as we walk the spiritual pathway, we will pass by diversions that entice us to turn away from the straight and narrow path. Like with the breakfast pastry table, each of us is enticed differently. For some, the enticement is like the donuts. For others, it is like the scones or the turnovers. Satan knows the truth of Matthew 26:41: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak," and he would love for us to get distracted from our spiritual goals by things like the diversions of the breakfast pastries.
So how do we withstand the diversions that distract us from our goal of staying on the straight and narrow path? The answer is to get into God's spiritual exercise room and make use of the equipment God has provided. Here are a few suggestions; nothing new, but most of us probably need a refresher course.
*Stay away from anything that you know will entice you to be drawn away from your relationship with your Savior. Example: If you struggle with alcohol, don't keep driving by your favorite liquor store.
*Stay in God's Word, and go before Him in prayer daily.
*Develop friendships with other Christians who will encourage you in your faith, but also challenge you when needed.
*Follow John 14:15. " If you love Me, keep my commandments."
*Don't quench the guidance of God the Holy Spirit, and then rationalize your actions.
Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path."
Sigue Juan 14:15: “Si me aman, guarden Mis mandamientos”.
