Being a Healthy Christian - Romans 8:5-6 - July 8, 2026

Romans 8:5-6 - For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Do you realize that you have a choice in the matter? Do you realize that setting your mind on a particular thought is purposeful? When you set your mind, there is an intentional dwelling on either the things of the Spirit, or things of the flesh.

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Col. 3:2)

So, when our desire is truly to set our minds on the things of the Spirit, how do we do it practically? How do we shift gears from thoughts of the flesh to Spirit-filled thoughts and direction?

First, when the Spirit is convicting that your thoughts are of the flesh, recognize and obey the prompting to stop.

Next, with intent, ask the Holy Spirit to redirect your thoughts.

One way to do this is to spend time in prayer. Another thing that I have found effective is memorizing and quoting Scripture in my mind. Many years ago, I chose “alphabet verses” to memorize; verses that contain a word I can remember. For example: A is for ashamed (Rom. 1:16), B is for born (1 Jn. 5:4), C is for cornerstone (Matt. 21:42) … Z is for zealous (Rev.3:19).

Perhaps the most effective verse for today’s topic is … X is for excellence … yes, I cheated. Yet this verse offers 8 different ideas to set your mind on… very practical.

Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brothers, 1) whatever is true, 2) whatever is honorable, 3) whatever is just, 4) whatever is pure, 5) whatever is lovely, 6) whatever is commendable, 7) if there is any excellence, 8) if there is anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

Dear Lord. We desire to have our minds always directed to you, yet when we fail, please intervene with your Spirit and convict us to alter our minds toward you. You have given us your Word to hide in our hearts to bring us to remembrance of your faithfulness in providing a way of “escape” from temptation. Amen.

Querido Señor, deseamos tener nuestra mente siempre dirigida hacia Ti.
