Daily Word of Encouragement 7.9.25 - Ben Steele

Identity in Christ - Galatians 2:15-21 - July 9, 2025 

"We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose." (Galatians 2:15-21) 

This Spring, I coached my daughter's fastpitch softball team. I was determined that the Windsor 12U Hurricanes would be the most cohesive, encouraging, fun, and hard-working girls in the league. We would all bring our good attitudes and skills, and winning would follow. I was not prepared for the drama, attitudes, and mood swings of 11 Junior High girls (Julian and Cora, my prayers are with you!). The hardest thing for me was watching some of these girls who wrap up their entire identity in their performance for the day. You could hear it in their parents' affirmations, as well. If they got a good hit, or made the correct defensive play, or pitched well, they felt comfortable and confident, and their parents let them know as such. If they didn't, the opposite was also true, regardless of what the coach was saying.   

In Galatians 2:20, Paul writes that when we belong to Christ, our identity is solely in Him. This is so simple, but it is also one of the primary targets of Satan's attacks. My identity is solely in Christ. Your identity is solely in Christ. Not in accomplishments, failures, money, sin, jobs, diagnoses, abuse, family, or looks. Nothing we can do, or that can be done to us, will affect our standing and eternal position if we are secure in Christ. Since we know Christ is both unchanging and trustworthy, this is an identity that does not waver, and we can be confident in Him.   

This means two main things for those of us who are in Christ. First, we need to stop holding on to the things that are no longer our identity. Easier said than done! If we claim to be a Christian and our identity is in Christ, our speech, actions, schedule, thoughts, relationships, and bank statements should all point to Christ. If they don't, then we are likely holding onto something else that we truly believe is our identity. Second, I believe that we have a responsibility to those around us to reaffirm their proper identities. 1 Thess 5:11 says, "Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." In Matthew 28, Jesus tells us to "Go and make disciples of all nations ... teaching them to obey everything I have commanded of you." For parents, this means that our job is not to produce Honor Roll students or star athletes, but rather to raise children who are confident in their identity in Christ. For everyone, this means that we are teammates together. Just like the Hurricanes this year, who's coach wanted them to pick each other up when they struck out, and encourage and cheer for each other, and give them confidence in their position on the team, you have people in your life that need to both be encouraged and to hear the truth - this is part of discipleship!   

Our failures and accomplishments don't define us, nor do they define those around us. Christ defines us. Let's live like it!

Lord, I desire to find my identity only in you. Please reveal to me the areas where I am coming up short in this. I ask for your Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts, actions, and words. Help me recognize when Satan is lying to me about my identity. Please give me consistency across my heart and mind that leads to a life with a confident identity in you. Amen. 

Palabra diaria de aliento basada en la lectura de hoy     

Identidad en Cristo - Gálatas 2:15-21 - 9 de julio de 2025 

«Nosotros, que somos judíos de nacimiento y no pecadores gentiles, sabemos que no se justifica el hombre por las obras de la ley, sino por la fe en Jesucristo; y nosotros también hemos creído en Cristo Jesús, para ser justificados por la fe en Cristo y no por las obras de la ley, porque por las obras de la ley nadie será justificado. Pero si, en nuestro esfuerzo por ser justificados en Cristo, también nosotros somos hallados pecadores, ¿es Cristo entonces siervo del pecado? ¡De ninguna manera! Porque si yo reconstruyo lo que derribé, me constituyo a mí mismo transgresor. Porque por medio de la ley morí a la ley, para vivir a Dios. He sido crucificado con Cristo. Ya no soy yo quien vive, sino Cristo quien vive en mí. Y la vida que ahora vivo en la carne, la vivo por la fe en el Hijo de Dios, quien me amó y se entregó por mí. No anulo la gracia de Dios, porque si la justicia fuera por la ley, entonces Cristo murió en vano. (Gálatas 2:15-21) 

Esta primavera, entrené al equipo de sóftbol de mi hija. Estaba decidida a que las Windsor 12U Hurricanes fueran las chicas más unidas, alentadoras, divertidas y trabajadoras de la liga. Todas aportaríamos nuestra buena actitud y nuestras habilidades, y la victoria llegaría. No estaba preparada para el drama, las actitudes y los cambios de humor de 11 chicas de secundaria (¡Julian y Cora, mis oraciones están con vosotras!).. Lo más difícil para mí fue ver a algunas de estas chicas que basaban toda su identidad en su rendimiento del día. También se notaba en las afirmaciones de sus padres. Si conseguían un buen golpe, hacían una jugada defensiva correcta o lanzaban bien, se sentían cómodas y seguras, y sus padres se lo hacían saber. Si no lo conseguían, ocurría lo contrario, independientemente de lo que dijera el entrenador. 

En Gálatas 2:20, Pablo escribe que cuando pertenecemos a Cristo, nuestra identidad está únicamente en Él. Esto es muy sencillo, pero también es uno de los principales objetivos de los ataques de Satanás. Mi identidad está únicamente en Cristo. Tu identidad está únicamente en Cristo. No en los logros, los fracasos, el dinero, el pecado, el trabajo, los diagnósticos, el abuso, la familia o la apariencia. Nada de lo que podamos hacer, ni nada de lo que nos puedan hacer, afectará nuestra posición y nuestro lugar eterno si estamos seguros en Cristo. Puesto que sabemos que Cristo es inmutable y digno de confianza, esta es una identidad que no vacila, y podemos confiar en Él.   

Esto significa dos cosas principales para aquellos de nosotros que estamos en Cristo. Primero, debemos dejar de aferrarnos a las cosas que ya no son nuestra identidad. ¡Es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo! Si afirmamos ser cristianos y nuestra identidad está en Cristo, nuestras palabras, acciones, horarios, pensamientos, relaciones y extractos bancarios deberían apuntar a Cristo. Si no es así, es probable que estemos aferrándonos a otra cosa que realmente creemos que es nuestra identidad. En segundo lugar, creo que tenemos la responsabilidad hacia quienes nos rodean de reafirmar su identidad. 1 Tesalonicenses 5:11 dice: «Por lo tanto, animaos unos a otros y edificaos unos a otros, tal como lo estáis haciendo». En Mateo 28, Jesús nos dice: «Id y haced discípulos a todas las naciones... enseñándoles a obedecer todo lo que os he mandado». Para los padres, esto significa que nuestra tarea no es producir estudiantes con matrícula de honor o atletas estrella, sino criar hijos que tengan confianza en su identidad en Cristo. Para todos, esto significa que somos compañeros de equipo. Al igual que los Hurricanes de este año, cuyo entrenador quería que se animaran unos a otros cuando fallaban, que se animaran y se alabaran mutuamente, y que les dieran confianza en su posición en el equipo, tú tienes personas en tu vida que necesitan tanto ser animadas como escuchar la verdad: ¡esto es parte del discipulado! 

Nuestros fracasos y logros no nos definen, ni definen a quienes nos rodean. Cristo nos define. ¡Vivamos así!

Señor, deseo encontrar mi identidad solo en ti. Por favor, revélame las áreas en las que me estoy quedando corto en esto. Te pido que tu Espíritu Santo guíe mis pensamientos, acciones y palabras. Ayúdame a reconocer cuándo Satanás me miente sobre mi identidad. Por favor, dame consistencia en mi corazón y en mi mente que me lleve a una vida con una identidad segura en ti. Amén.
