Daily Word of Encouragement 7.9.26 - Mary Cooney
Being a Healthy Christian - Isaiah 26:3-4 - July 9, 2026
Isaiah 26:3-4 - "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, (perfect, true, unbroken peace) whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. 4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength."
Peace. Who doesn't want peace? I looked it up: the word 'peace' is used 400 times in the KJV. Much of the time, it is not referring to political peace but to the mental and emotional "peace that passes understanding" (Phil.4)
I think it's important for us to understand God's desire here; He didn't intend for us to live agitated, anxious lives. His word makes it very clear that in His presence, there is peace. (Rom. 5:1)
My mother struggled with her mental health her whole life. She was bipolar before they invented the word. In her day, the symptom was treated rather than the problem. She was given medication, and when that quit working, more medication. Postpartum depression after baby number three, long days home alone with three littles, no community, a disconnected husband who didn't know how to engage, and worst of all, no relationship with Jesus. I had two littles, plenty of community, and a strong relationship with Jesus, and I remember thinking, "No wonder my mother struggled! This is hard!"
When today's passage was written, life was hard for the people of Israel. Isaiah was there when Sennacherib surrounded the city and taunted God. As people lined the city walls, the Assyrian general spoke in the common language for maximum freak-out effect. Imagine yourself standing on that wall, and imagine all the "what ifs" that fly through your mind. My children sent away, my husband killed, my family dispersed, my dishes broken!… You can add your own fears! You know the routine: your mind begins to spiral out of control. So what's the answer? How do you possibly find peace when your mind is a whirlwind of fear, anxiety, and what-ifs?
When I was teaching Spanish, I used to ask the wiggly littles, "Who is the boss of your body?" It is a question I will ask you. You were created in God's image, with an amazing array of gifts, talents, and privileges, and created with an autonomy that defies reason. Why in the world would God make us and then let us reject Him, deny Him, ignore Him, and disobey Him? I don't have an answer for that. I just know He did. He desires to be our Shepherd, Savior, and Friend. He created us to be the boss of our bodies. We choose how we live, how we treat it, who and what we believe. The formula is simple: Who can have peace? Those who trust God.
KJV says, "whose mind is stayed on Thee". "Stayed": to lean, lay, rest, take hold of, stand fast, sustain.
"Because he trusts in Thee." Trust: to have confidence, to be confident, to be bold, to be secure, to hie for refuge. (Hie: to go quickly or hasten)
This passage was a song. God knows how influential music is to our minds and souls. When we are afraid, anxious, confused, and/or stuck - we rehearse what is true. We fix our eyes on Jesus. (Heb.12) We choose to believe what God says about us. We want to spend our lives learning what God thinks about us, learning the greatness of this Rock who sees our fears and anxiety and stands by us through every one of them.
For in God the Lord we have an everlasting Rock.

Paz. ¿Quién no quiere paz?
