Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 13 - August 2, 2025
Psalm 13 deals with emotions.
The emotion that the psalmist expresses is not accurate, but it is real! Regardless, God deals with us amid our emotions in a compassionate way.
The first two verses proclaim a perception that is common to human beings, that we have been abandoned… and according to us, it happened ages ago! What do we know about forever? And yet our patience and perseverance, just like the psalmist's, are quickly exhausted. Sometimes our waiting is a result of decisions and directions that we have chosen. Even so, God remains compassionate and caring, longing to guide us out of our funk — our sin.
Other times, it is merely a season where God is refining us for His purposes. But in the midst of what God is doing, how should we respond? A lack of gratitude is the worst of sins because it allows us to wallow in perceived deprivation while God extends to us His loving hand of deliverance.
Isaiah 49 is just one of many passages that tell us that God will not forget us. "Even if a nursing woman can manage to deny her child or fail to have compassion on the fruit of her womb, God says: Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you." (15) God continues His promise as He declares, "those who wait for me shall not be put to shame." (23) How can we deal with our disappointments and feelings of neglect and rejection? The psalmist gives us the answer in the following verses. He reaffirms the truth about the LORD, "O LORD my God!" He knows in the deepest recesses of his heart that the LORD is HIS GOD, and he pleads for intervention so that the enemy will not rejoice. He wants God's name to be exalted and the enemy to be thwarted so that no one will assume or deduce that the enemy has prevailed. That is not an option!
In the last two verses, he turns to remembering and projecting. Remembering, "I have trusted in your steadfast love; because he has dealt bountifully with me". Both of these declarations are reminders of a time when he experienced God's presence and provision. They surround his projection, a promise of action that will reinforce the truth of God in his life despite what is happening in his circumstances: "My heart shall rejoice in your salvation" and "I will sing to the Lord."
How many promises do we need of God's faithfulness? He has proclaimed it many times over in His word. Perhaps we just need to be continually reminded of that reality. Here is a famous one to contemplate again:
Isaiah 40:28-31
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.
Father in heaven, help us to focus our heart and mind today, moment by moment, on the eternal provision that you have made for our salvation in the sacrifice, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and through that provision to be reminded of your continual care for us regardless of what our temporary state might appear to dictate. Help us to realize that we are more than conquerors through your love for us.

El Salmo 13 trata sobre las emociones.
La emoción que expresa el salmista no es precisa, ¡pero es real! A pesar de ello, Dios nos trata con compasión en medio de nuestras emociones.
Los dos primeros versículos proclaman una percepción común a los seres humanos: que hemos sido abandonados... ¡y según nosotros, eso ocurrió hace mucho tiempo! ¿Qué sabemos nosotros de la eternidad? Y, sin embargo, nuestra paciencia y perseverancia, al igual que las del salmista, se agotan rápidamente. A veces, nuestra espera es el resultado de decisiones y caminos que hemos elegido. Aun así, Dios sigue siendo compasivo y bondadoso, anhelando guiarnos fuera de nuestro desánimo, de nuestro pecado.
Otras veces, se trata simplemente de una temporada en la que Dios nos está refinando para sus propósitos. Pero en medio de lo que Dios está haciendo, ¿cómo debemos responder? La falta de gratitud es el peor de los pecados porque nos permite regodearnos en la privación percibida mientras Dios nos tiende su mano amorosa de liberación.
Isaías 49 es solo uno de los muchos pasajes que nos dicen que Dios no nos olvidará. «Aunque una mujer que amamanta pueda negar a su hijo o no tener compasión del fruto de su vientre, Dios dice: Aunque estas olviden, yo no te olvidaré». (15) Dios mantiene su promesa al declarar: «Los que esperan en mí no serán avergonzados». (23) ¿Cómo podemos lidiar con nuestras decepciones y sentimientos de abandono y rechazo? El salmista nos da la respuesta en los siguientes versículos. Reafirma la verdad acerca del Señor: «¡Oh Señor, Dios mío!». Él sabe en lo más profundo de su corazón que el Señor es SU DIOS, y suplica su intervención para que el enemigo no se regocije. Quiere que el nombre de Dios sea exaltado y que el enemigo sea frustrado, para que nadie suponga o deduzca que el enemigo ha prevalecido. ¡Eso no es una opción!
En los dos últimos versículos, se vuelve a recordar y a proyectar. Recordando: «He confiado en tu amor constante, porque él ha sido generoso conmigo». Ambas declaraciones son recordatorios de un momento en el que experimentó la presencia y la provisión de Dios. Rodean su proyección, una promesa de acción que reforzará la verdad de Dios en su vida a pesar de lo que está sucediendo en sus circunstancias: «Mi corazón se regocijará en tu salvación» y «Cantaré al Señor».
¿Cuántas promesas necesitamos de la fidelidad de Dios? Él la ha proclamado muchas veces en su Palabra. Quizás solo necesitamos que se nos recuerde continuamente esa realidad. He aquí una famosa promesa para meditar de nuevo:
Isaías 40:28-31
¿No lo sabías? ¿No lo has oído?
El Señor es el Dios eterno,
el Creador de los confines de la tierra.
No se cansa ni se fatiga;
su entendimiento es insondable.
Da fuerzas al cansado
y al que no tiene fuerzas le aumenta el vigor.
Aun los jóvenes se cansan y se fatigan,
y los muchachos tropiezan y caen;
pero los que esperan al Señor renovarán sus fuerzas;
se levantarán con alas como las águilas;
correrán y no se fatigarán;
caminarán y no se cansarán.
Padre celestial, ayúdanos a enfocar nuestro corazón y nuestra mente hoy, momento a momento, en la provisión eterna que has hecho para nuestra salvación en el sacrificio, la muerte y la resurrección de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo, y a través de esa provisión, a recordar tu cuidado continuo por nosotros, independientemente de lo que nuestra situación temporal parezca dictar. Ayúdanos a darnos cuenta de que somos más que vencedores a través de tu amor por nosotros.
