Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 16 - August 25, 2025
Psalm 16:1 ESV
[1] Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
Psalm 16:11 ESV
[11] You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
The only book I have ever read multiple times and get more out of every time is the Bible. My wife and family are big readers. They love the Harry Potter series and have read it several times. I have read several one-thousand-page fantasy novels. Sometimes I will reread a novel or a nonfiction book to remind myself of the content. However, when I do, there is a familiarity, there is a subtle knowing of the repetition. Sure, I may gain a few insights into a character that I might have missed in the first read through, but the story is the same.
When I read through the book of Psalms, I cannot help but repeat a Psalm as I go through. The Psalms are songs, and you listen to songs over and over again because you enjoy them the first time. And they are usually shorter than it takes to read a thousand pages!
Also, when it comes to other parts of the Bible, repetition and rereading it is different. The Word of God truly is “living and active”. I find this in no other book, and it is a wonderful experience. To reread a passage over and over again and find comfort and fullness of joy.
For the last week, I have repeated the first verse of Psalm 16: “Preserve me, O God”. Whatever emotion you may be feeling, this statement, this cry, can be true. “I take refuge in you”.
The reason we can take refuge in Him is because in His “presence is fullness of joy”. There are no true pleasures in this world apart from him. “In your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.”
Because it is a song, I also tend to go out of order and reread sections. Verse 7 also stands out to me. “My mind instructs me in the night”. How wonderful it is that the Lord can instruct us while we are sleeping and dreaming. Even more reason to repeat these words before we go to sleep at night.
Repeat these words throughout your day today. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through these words. They are good. They are true. While reading, we are in His presence.

[11] Tú me has dado a conocer los caminos de la vida; en tu presencia hay plenitud de gozo; a tu diestra hay deleites para siempre.
El único libro que he leído varias veces y del que saco más provecho cada vez que lo leo es la Biblia. Mi esposa y mi familia son grandes lectores. Les encanta la serie de Harry Potter y la han leído varias veces. He leído varias novelas fantásticas de mil páginas. A veces releo una novela o un libro de no ficción para recordar el contenido. Sin embargo, cuando lo hago, hay una familiaridad, un sutil conocimiento de la repetición. Claro, puedo obtener algunas ideas sobre un personaje que tal vez no haya captado en la primera lectura, pero la historia es la misma.
Cuando leo el libro de los Salmos, no puedo evitar repetir un salmo a medida que avanzo. Los salmos son canciones, y las canciones se escuchan una y otra vez porque te gustan la primera vez. ¡Y suelen ser más cortas que lo que se tarda en leer mil páginas!
Además, cuando se trata de otras partes de la Biblia, la repetición y la relectura son diferentes. La Palabra de Dios es verdaderamente «viva y activa». No encuentro esto en ningún otro libro, y es una experiencia maravillosa. Releer un pasaje una y otra vez y encontrar consuelo y plenitud de alegría.
Durante la última semana, he repetido el primer versículo del Salmo 16: «Guárdame, oh Dios». Sea cual sea la emoción que estés sintiendo, esta afirmación, este grito, puede ser cierto. «Me refugio en ti».
La razón por la que podemos refugiarnos en Él es porque en su «presencia hay plenitud de alegría». No hay verdaderos placeres en este mundo aparte de Él. «En tu diestra hay deleites para siempre».
Como es una canción, también tiendo a saltarme el orden y releer algunas secciones. El versículo 7 también me llama la atención. «Mi mente me instruye en la noche». Qué maravilloso es que el Señor pueda instruirnos mientras dormimos y soñamos. Razón de más para repetir estas palabras antes de irnos a dormir por la noche.
Repite estas palabras a lo largo del día de hoy. El Espíritu Santo nos habla a través de estas palabras. Son buenas. Son verdaderas. Mientras las leemos, estamos en su presencia.
