Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 37 - August 28, 2025
Psalm 37:5-6 - Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
As I’ve written in previous devotions, Christianity is full of paradoxes. One such paradox is the focus of today’s devotion. In Psalm 37:5, we are commanded to commit our way to the Lord, and HE will act. Not we, but He. The Christian life is one of active commitment and trust, but at the same time, allowing God to perform work through you. This is wise living according to David in this Psalm.
It is a common thing to hear in church on Sunday: “Allow God to work through you.” The question is: “What does that mean?” I mean, it sounds really nice and spiritually filling. It is easy to nod along and say, “Amen.” But, if someone were to ask you how to actively live a life in which you allow God to work through you, would you have a sensible answer?
Truth be told, I’m not sure that there is a simple and easy-to-understand answer. However, God’s Word provides clear principles and directives for us that can help us fill out our understanding of this paradox.
Some verses make very clear that we are to actively do everything in the name of Jesus:
Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
1 Corinthians 10:31: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Other verses make very clear that we are to allow Him to do the work through us:
Colossians 1:29: “For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”
Philippians 2:12-13: “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
The key to living in a way that allows God to work through us is by having an active faith. It doesn’t mean that we sit back, passively waiting for things to happen. Rather, we are to work hard, do all we can do, fight with passion and vigor, but do it by faith. Faith is the key thing working in the heart of a Christian to connect the everyday tasks that we do to the power of the Holy Spirit working through us.
So, as you go today, keep moving, working, and toiling, but do it through active faith and trust that God is working in and through you.

Salmo 37:5-6 - Encomienda al Señor tu camino; confía en él, y él actuará. Él hará resplandecer tu justicia como la luz, y tu derecho como el mediodía.
Como he escrito en devociones anteriores, el cristianismo está lleno de paradojas. Una de esas paradojas es el tema central de la devoción de hoy. En el Salmo 37:5, se nos ordena encomendar nuestro camino al Señor, y ÉL actuará. No nosotros, sino Él. La vida cristiana es una vida de compromiso activo y confianza, pero al mismo tiempo, de permitir que Dios obre a través de ti. Según David en este salmo, esta es una forma sabia de vivir.
Es algo común escuchar en la iglesia los domingos: «Permite que Dios obre a través de ti». La pregunta es: «¿Qué significa eso?». Quiero decir, suena muy bien y es espiritualmente satisfactorio. Es fácil asentir con la cabeza y decir «Amén». Pero, si alguien te preguntara cómo vivir activamente una vida en la que permites que Dios obre a través de ti, ¿tendrías una respuesta sensata?
A decir verdad, no estoy seguro de que haya una respuesta sencilla y fácil de entender. Sin embargo, la Palabra de Dios nos proporciona principios y directrices claros que pueden ayudarnos a completar nuestra comprensión de esta paradoja.
Algunos versículos dejan muy claro que debemos hacer todo activamente en el nombre de Jesús:
Colosenses 3:17: «Y todo lo que hagáis, sea de palabra o de hecho, hacedlo todo en el nombre del Señor Jesús, dando gracias a Dios Padre por medio de él».
1 Corintios 10:31: «Así que, ya sea que comáis o bebáis, o cualquier cosa que hagáis, hacedlo todo para la gloria de Dios».
Otros versículos dejan muy claro que debemos permitir que Él haga la obra a través de nosotros:
Colosenses 1:29: «Por eso me esfuerzo, luchando con toda su energía, que él obra poderosamente en mí».
Filipenses 2:12-13: «Por lo tanto, mis amados, como siempre han obedecido, ahora, no solo en mi presencia, sino mucho más en mi ausencia, trabajen en su propia salvación con temor y temblor, porque es Dios quien obra en ustedes, tanto para querer como para hacer lo que le agrada».
La clave para vivir de una manera que permita a Dios obrar a través de nosotros es tener una fe activa. Esto no significa que nos sentemos a esperar pasivamente a que sucedan las cosas. Más bien, debemos trabajar duro, hacer todo lo que podamos, luchar con pasión y vigor, pero hacerlo por fe. La fe es la clave que obra en el corazón de un cristiano para conectar las tareas cotidianas que realizamos con el poder del Espíritu Santo que obra a través de nosotros.
Así que, al salir hoy, sigan moviéndose, trabajando y esforzándose, pero háganlo a través de una fe activa y con la confianza de que Dios está obrando en ustedes y a través de ustedes.
