Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 86 - August 7, 2025 

Have you ever observed somebody who is so skilled at a particular sport, hobby, or task that people use sayings like “they make it look so easy” or “it must just come naturally for them”? When we approach God’s Word, I think it can be easy to fall into that mindset about some of the heroes of our faith, Abraham, Noah, Moses, Sarah, and indeed the author of today’s passage, David. Sure, we know they had their moments of struggle, but since they’re in the Bible, it must mean they had it all together, and, for the most part, their faith came easily, right? I love passages like Psalm 86, where we are reminded that our heroes were very real people with very real struggles, and like us, their dependence on God was a daily battle. 

Throughout the Psalm, David continually expresses his need for God and His wisdom in his life. “…for to you do I cry…”, “…listen to my plea for grace.”, “Teach me your way, O Lord…” These are requests that you might initially think are coming from somebody who is in despair and struggling in their faith. But this is David, who, despite his favorable standing before God, still humbly realizes that he needs God’s wisdom, faithfulness, and steadfast love every day. Never do we reach a point where we should stop seeking after God. That’s exactly what the enemy wants, and exactly when he will attack. David’s desire that he is pleading before God is that he would continue to “walk in Your truth.” That’s the entire message of Psalm 86. Never stop walking, never stop seeking God, never stop relying on His grace and mercy, never rely on your own strength. 

I encourage you today to approach God with the same attitude and humility that we see from David. No matter what life looks like right now, good or bad, easy or difficult, we should pray as David did. “Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace. In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me…Turn to me and be gracious to me; give your strength to your servant.”

¿Alguna vez has observado a alguien que es tan hábil en un deporte, pasatiempo o tarea en particular que la gente dice cosas como «lo hace parecer tan fácil» o «seguro que le sale de forma natural»? Cuando nos acercamos a la Palabra de Dios, creo que es fácil caer en esa mentalidad con respecto a algunos de los héroes de nuestra fe, como Abraham, Noé, Moisés, Sara y, por supuesto, el autor del pasaje de hoy, David. Claro, sabemos que tuvieron momentos difíciles, pero como aparecen en la Biblia, eso debe significar que lo tenían todo bajo control y que, en su mayor parte, su fe les resultaba fácil, ¿verdad? Me encantan pasajes como el Salmo 86, donde se nos recuerda que nuestros héroes eran personas muy reales con luchas muy reales y que, al igual que nosotros, su dependencia de Dios era una batalla diaria. 

A lo largo del salmo, David expresa continuamente su necesidad de Dios y de Su sabiduría en su vida. «... porque a ti clamo...», «... escucha mi súplica por tu misericordia», «Enséñame, Señor, tu camino...». Estas son peticiones que, en un primer momento, podrían parecer propias de alguien desesperado y con dificultades en su fe. Pero se trata de David, quien, a pesar de su favorable posición ante Dios, sigue reconociendo con humildad que necesita cada día la sabiduría, la fidelidad y el amor inquebrantable de Dios. Nunca debemos llegar a un punto en el que dejemos de buscar a Dios. Eso es exactamente lo que quiere el enemigo, y es precisamente entonces cuando atacará. El deseo que David implora ante Dios es seguir «caminando en tu verdad». Ese es el mensaje completo del Salmo 86. Nunca dejes de caminar, nunca dejes de buscar a Dios, nunca dejes de confiar en su gracia y misericordia, nunca confíes en tu propia fuerza. 

Te animo hoy a que te acerques a Dios con la misma actitud y humildad que vemos en David. No importa cómo sea tu vida en este momento, buena o mala, fácil o difícil, debemos orar como lo hizo David. «Escucha, Señor, mi oración; atiende a mi súplica por tu misericordia. En el día de mi angustia te invoco, porque tú me respondes... Vuélvete a mí y ten misericordia de mí; da tu fuerza a tu siervo».
