Daily Word of Encouragement 8.9.25 - Julian Marcel

Praying in the Psalms - Psalm 18 - August 9, 2025 

Psalm 18:2 - The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 

David was a man with many enemies. Not only did he wage war with the likes of Goliath and the brutal Philistine army, but he also was constantly dodging attacks from King Saul, who had become jealous and angry towards David. The truth is that David faced more physical assaults than just about any of us. With that being said, even today, believers all around the world are facing attacks–both physically and spiritually. It is easy for us to neglect the reality of the spiritual war that is being waged all around us (and even within us). David's Psalm 18 is a wonderful reminder of the character of God based upon His undeniable work of delivering His people from their enemies.   

What I'd like to do, briefly, is to overview Psalm 18:2, and the titles of God that David prescribes to the Lord after His work of deliverance. 

My Rock. This is literally translated as "a cleft rock," for concealment. What David is making clear here by referring to God as his rock is that God is his hiding place in times of trouble. We can know that no matter what is going on in our lives, God is safe with us–not because of our righteousness, but because of the peace we have with God due to Christ's work. 

My Fortress. This word means "mountain stronghold," or "natural stronghold." This speaks to the very nature of God to be, in Himself, a fortress or stronghold. He does not move. He does not change. He is constant. He is present. We can know that He's always a fortress for us. 

My Deliverer. Here, David clearly states that God is the one to whom his deliverance is credited. He saved David from the hand of his enemies, and in the same way, He delivers us from the domain of darkness and our slavery to sin so that we can live in the light of eternal life. 

My Shield. David continues to build on what he's already stated by making the point that God isn't just a rock/fortress that we can hide in, but He is also an active shield and protection. He guards us from ongoing attacks and even deflects attacks back to the attackers. We can trust that God is for us. 

The Horn of my Salvation. The word horn can also be translated as "strength" or "might." This serves as a summary term for the character of God that David is painting in this verse of thanksgiving. God is the one who provides all the strength and might necessary to bring about salvation and deliverance. No matter what, God is always worthy of all of our praise and thanksgiving, because He is the one who brings it to pass. 

My encouragement today is that you reflect on the character of God as revealed in Psalm 18:2, the God of deliverance. The same God David praised is the God we serve today, and we have an opportunity to depend on and trust in Him each and every day. Blessings. 

Palabra diaria de aliento basada en la lectura de hoy     

Orando en los Salmos - Salmo 18 - 9 de agosto de 2025 

Salmo 18:2 - El Señor es mi roca y mi fortaleza, mi libertador, mi Dios, mi roca, en quien me refugio, mi escudo y el cuerno de mi salvación, mi baluarte. 

David era un hombre con muchos enemigos. No solo libró guerras contra Goliat y el brutal ejército filisteo, sino que también tuvo que esquivar constantemente los ataques del rey Saúl, que se había vuelto celoso y enfadado con él. La verdad es que David se enfrentó a más agresiones físicas que cualquiera de nosotros. Dicho esto, incluso hoy en día, los creyentes de todo el mundo se enfrentan a ataques, tanto físicos como espirituales. Es fácil para nosotros descuidar la realidad de la guerra espiritual que se libra a nuestro alrededor (e incluso dentro de nosotros). El Salmo 18 de David es un maravilloso recordatorio del carácter de Dios basado en Su innegable obra de liberar a Su pueblo de sus enemigos. 

Lo que me gustaría hacer, brevemente, es repasar el Salmo 18:2 y los títulos que David atribuye al Señor después de Su obra de liberación. 

Mi roca. Esto se traduce literalmente como «una roca hendida», para esconderse. Lo que David deja claro aquí al referirse a Dios como su roca es que Dios es su refugio en tiempos de angustia. Podemos saber que, sin importar lo que esté pasando en nuestras vidas, Dios está a salvo con nosotros, no por nuestra justicia, sino por la paz que tenemos con Dios gracias a la obra de Cristo. 

Mi fortaleza. Esta palabra significa «fortaleza en la montaña» o «fortaleza natural». Esto habla de la naturaleza misma de Dios, que es, en sí mismo, una fortaleza o un baluarte. Él no se mueve. No cambia. Es constante. Está presente. Podemos saber que Él es siempre una fortaleza para nosotros. 

Mi libertador. Aquí, David afirma claramente que Dios es a quien se le atribuye su liberación. Él salvó a David de la mano de sus enemigos y, de la misma manera, nos libera del dominio de las tinieblas y de nuestra esclavitud al pecado para que podamos vivir en la luz de la vida eterna. 

Mi escudo. David continúa desarrollando lo que ya ha dicho, señalando que Dios no es solo una roca o una fortaleza en la que podemos escondernos, sino que también es un escudo activo y una protección. Él nos guarda de los ataques continuos e incluso desvía los ataques hacia los atacantes. Podemos confiar en que Dios está con nosotros. 

El cuerno de mi salvación. La palabra cuerno también puede traducirse como «fuerza» o «poder». Esto sirve como término resumen para el carácter de Dios que David describe en este versículo de acción de gracias. Dios es quien proporciona toda la fuerza y el poder necesarios para traer la salvación y la liberación. Pase lo que pase, Dios siempre es digno de toda nuestra alabanza y acción de gracias, porque Él es quien lo hace posible. 

Mi aliento para hoy es que reflexionen sobre el carácter de Dios tal y como se revela en el Salmo 18:2, el Dios de la liberación. El mismo Dios al que alabó David es el Dios al que servimos hoy, y tenemos la oportunidad de depender de Él y confiar en Él cada día. Bendiciones.
