The Kingdom of God - Psalm 72 - September 10, 2026
Psalm 72:1, 20 - "Give the king Thy judgments Oh God, and Thy righteousness to the king's son. The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended."
Although most bible scholars believe that Psalm 72 is a messianic psalm, they differ on who wrote it. Some think that it was written by Solomon, and others think that verse 20 points to the author being King David. If David is the author, it reflects his passing the baton of leadership to his son Solomon. In this devotion I am going to spin off the belief that King David wrote it.
Although we love and take care of our children when they are young, that love and concern doesn't end when they move out of our homes; it continues until God takes us home to heaven. We see an example of this is Genesis 49 where Jacob knows that he is about to die, He has gathered his sons around him to bless them and to charge them regarding their future. Genesis 49:33 "When Jacob finished charging his sons, he drew his feet into the bed, and breathed his last."
As we walk through life, one of our top priorities is praying for the physical and spiritual wellbeing of our children and grandchildren. When it comes to their spiritual wellbeing it can be a bit tricky. Some of us have children and grandchildren, who accepted Christ as Savior at a young age, and have walked with Him their entire lives. (praise the Lord!!). Others of us may have a mix; some who are saved and walking with the Lord, and others who professed belief at a young age, but now there is very little, if any, evidence of their salvation. In 1 Samuel 16:7 we read, "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." This probably leaves us praying two ways: "Lord, if they are saved, please bring them back to walking with you, and if they are not saved, please draw them to salvation." Some of us may even have children and grandchildren who grew up in a solid Christian homes, and yet they have never shown any interest in spiritual things. If you have a child or grandchild like this I am sure that you will be passionately praying for him or her until you die.
Takeaway: Besides praying for your unsaved and wayward children and grandchildren, it is important that you live a God honoring life before them. Seeing Christ living in you, may be just what it takes to draw them to God or back to God.
* Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
* Colossians 4:5 "Conduct yourself with wisdom towards outsiders (unbelievers), making the most of your opportunities."
* 1 Peter 3:1-2 These verses are written to Christian wives, but the same principle relates to children and grandchildren. "Wives, even if your unsaved husbands refuse to accept the good news, your godly lives will speak to them without words. They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives." NLT Summarized
(NLT resumido)
