Daily Word of Encouragement 9.14.25 - Alena Thorp

The Gospel of Luke - Luke 11 - September 14, 2025

 When I first sat down to write this devotion, I thought about focusing on the Lord’s Prayer. But honestly, I didn’t feel like I had much to add. Then, while rereading Luke 11 alongside a new friend of mine—someone younger who, in some ways, reminds me of my younger self—I noticed something different. Even though we’re from the same generation, she felt like “the next generation” rising up in the church. That got me thinking: Luke 11 actually says a lot about generations.

 Jesus said in verses 29–30:

 “When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.”

 Every generation wrestles with doubt and longing for a sign. Ours is no different. Many are searching for proof that God is real. But Jesus has already given us the greatest sign—Himself.

 Later in verses 33–36, Jesus talks about the light inside of us:

 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”

 As believers, we carry the Holy Spirit within us. That light should not be hidden! It’s meant to shine, even when our culture pushes us to keep quiet about faith.

 Finally, Jesus warns the religious leaders in verses 46, 49–52 not to place heavy burdens on people or block the way to God: 

 “And he said, Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers… Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

 That challenges me: Am I helping the next generation step closer to Jesus, or am I unintentionally making it harder? We should never be exclusive, uninviting, or ashamed of the gospel.

 And in verse 28, Jesus reminds us:

 “But he said, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

 That blessing is for every generation—including the one rising up now.

 Dear God,

Thank You for the cross and for the light of Christ in us. We pray for the next generation—that they would seek You, knock, and find that You are faithful to answer. Help us not to be ashamed of the gospel, even in the face of persecution. Make us a generation that shines Your light boldly.

 Cuando me senté por primera vez a escribir esta devoción, pensé en centrarme en el Padrenuestro. Pero, sinceramente, no sentía que tuviera mucho que añadir. Entonces, mientras releía Lucas 11 junto a una nueva amiga mía, alguien más joven que, en cierto modo, me recuerda a mí misma cuando era joven, me di cuenta de algo diferente. Aunque somos de la misma generación, ella me parecía «la próxima generación» que se estaba levantando en la iglesia. Eso me hizo pensar: Lucas 11 en realidad dice mucho sobre las generaciones.

 Jesús dijo en los versículos 29-30:

 «Cuando la multitud aumentaba, comenzó a decir: Esta generación es una generación malvada. Busca una señal, pero no se le dará ninguna señal, excepto la señal de Jonás. Porque así como Jonás fue una señal para el pueblo de Nínive, así será el Hijo del Hombre para esta generación».

 Cada generación lucha con la duda y el anhelo de una señal. La nuestra no es diferente. Muchos buscan pruebas de que Dios es real. Pero Jesús ya nos ha dado la mayor señal: a sí mismo.

 Más adelante, en los versículos 33-36, Jesús habla de la luz que hay dentro de nosotros:

 «Nadie, después de encender una lámpara, la pone en un sótano o debajo de una cesta, sino en un lugar elevado, para que los que entran vean la luz. Tu ojo es la lámpara de tu cuerpo. Cuando tu ojo está sano, todo tu cuerpo está lleno de luz, pero cuando está mal, tu cuerpo está lleno de oscuridad. Por lo tanto, ten cuidado de que la luz que hay en ti no sea oscuridad. Si entonces todo tu cuerpo está lleno de luz, sin ninguna parte oscura, será completamente brillante, como cuando una lámpara con sus rayos te da luz».

  Como creyentes, llevamos al Espíritu Santo dentro de nosotros. ¡Esa luz no debe ocultarse! Está destinada a brillar, incluso cuando nuestra cultura nos empuja a callar sobre la fe.

 Finalmente, Jesús advierte a los líderes religiosos en los versículos 46, 49-52 que no impongan cargas pesadas a las personas ni bloqueen el camino hacia Dios:

 «Y dijo: ¡Ay también de vosotros, letrados! Porque cargáis a la gente con cargas difíciles de llevar, y vosotros mismos no tocáis esas cargas ni con un dedo... Por eso también la Sabiduría de Dios dijo: “Enviaré a ellos profetas y apóstoles, a algunos de los cuales matarán y perseguirán”, para que la sangre de todos los profetas, derramada desde la fundación del mundo, sea exigida a esta generación, desde la sangre de Abel hasta la sangre de Zacarías, que pereció entre el altar y el santuario. Sí, os digo que será exigida a esta generación. ¡Ay de vosotros, abogados! Porque habéis quitado la llave del conocimiento. Vosotros no entrasteis, y a los que entraban se lo impedisteis».

 Eso me desafía: ¿Estoy ayudando a la próxima generación a acercarse más a Jesús, o sin querer lo estoy haciendo más difícil? Nunca debemos ser exclusivos, poco acogedores o avergonzarnos del evangelio.

 Y en el versículo 28, Jesús nos recuerda:

 «Pero él dijo: ¡Bienaventurados más bien los que oyen la palabra de Dios y la guardan!».

 Esa bendición es para todas las generaciones, incluida la que está surgiendo ahora.

 Querido Dios

Gracias por la cruz y por la luz de Cristo en nosotros. Oramos por la próxima generación, para que te busquen, llamen a tu puerta y descubran que eres fiel en responder. Ayúdanos a no avergonzarnos del evangelio, incluso ante la persecución. Haznos una generación que brille con valentía tu luz.
