The Gospel of Luke - Luke 13 - September 16, 2025
Luke 13:3 - No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
I come to write this devotion shortly after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. While there are certainly mixed emotions towards him as a political figure, his death has sent shockwaves across the country. Whether or not you agreed with him on everything, he was a brother in Christ whose life was tragically taken prematurely. These sorts of watershed moments remind us of the finitude of human life. The truth is that none of us know whether we’ll wake up tomorrow, and this truth is sobering.
Over the course of Jesus’s ministry, He has been regularly teaching, preaching, healing illnesses and diseases, and exercising demons left and right. He has made His identity as the Messiah clear by His actions, and in doing so, He has made many enemies. Along the way, Jesus encounters many people that He dialogues with, and in the first part of Luke 13, he has an odd conversation with a group of people. The people ask him about “Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.” It is hard to pin down the exact historical details to which they are referring, but it seems like they are referencing an occasion in which Pilate had a group of Galileans suddenly killed. In verse 4, Jesus tells of another incident in which eighteen people were killed suddenly by a falling tower in Siloam. Both of these examples illustrate that human life can end without warning at any time.
Jesus’s response to these incidents is simple: Repent or perish. Due to the fact that tomorrow is not promised, the time is short to repent and believe in God for salvation. The simple preaching of Jesus to “repent or perish” reminds me of Jonah preaching to the Ninevites: “Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, ‘Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’” (Jonah 3:4). Similarly, John the Baptist proclaims, “Bear fruits in keeping with repentance…” (Luke 3:8).
This passage serves as a reminder that life is short, and in light of that, we must call people to repent urgently. If they remain in their sins, they will be alienated from God forever in hell. The stakes are high.
The question is: Will you preach repentance to those around you?
It is important to remember that God alone shines light into the hearts of sinful men, and we must be praying that His grace would bring them to life. The wonderful thing is that He uses us as human agents to proclaim the message of eternal life-so let’s get to work!

Lucas 13:3 - No, os digo; pero si no os arrepentís, todos pereceréis igualmente.
Escribo esta devoción poco después del asesinato de Charlie Kirk. Aunque sin duda hay opiniones encontradas sobre él como figura política, su muerte ha conmocionado a todo el país. Independientemente de si estabas de acuerdo con él en todo o no, era un hermano en Cristo cuya vida fue trágicamente arrebatada de forma prematura. Este tipo de momentos decisivos nos recuerdan la finitud de la vida humana. La verdad es que ninguno de nosotros sabe si mañana nos despertaremos, y esta verdad nos hace reflexionar.
A lo largo de su ministerio, Jesús ha estado enseñando, predicando, curando enfermedades y expulsando demonios de forma habitual. Ha dejado clara su identidad como Mesías con sus acciones y, al hacerlo, se ha ganado muchos enemigos. A lo largo del camino, Jesús se encuentra con muchas personas con las que dialoga y, en la primera parte de Lucas 13, tiene una extraña conversación con un grupo de personas. La gente le pregunta por «los galileos cuya sangre Pilato mezcló con sus sacrificios». Es difícil precisar los detalles históricos exactos a los que se refieren, pero parece que se refieren a una ocasión en la que Pilato mandó matar repentinamente a un grupo de galileos. En el versículo 4, Jesús cuenta otro incidente en el que dieciocho personas murieron repentinamente al caer una torre en Siloé. Ambos ejemplos ilustran que la vida humana puede terminar sin previo aviso en cualquier momento.
La respuesta de Jesús a estos incidentes es simple: arrepentíos o pereceréis. Debido al hecho de que el mañana no está prometido, el tiempo es corto para arrepentirse y creer en Dios para la salvación. La sencilla predicación de Jesús de «arrepentíos o pereceréis» me recuerda a Jonás predicando a los ninivitas: «Jonás comenzó a entrar en la ciudad, caminando un día de viaje. Y gritó: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días, Nínive será destruida!»». (Jonás 3:4). De manera similar, Juan el Bautista proclama: «Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento...» (Lucas 3:8).
Este pasaje sirve como recordatorio de que la vida es corta y, en vista de ello, debemos llamar a las personas a arrepentirse con urgencia. Si permanecen en sus pecados, se alejarán de Dios para siempre en el infierno. Hay mucho en juego.
La pregunta es: ¿Predicarás el arrepentimiento a quienes te rodean?
Es importante recordar que solo Dios ilumina los corazones de los hombres pecadores, y debemos orar para que Su gracia les dé vida. Lo maravilloso es que Él nos utiliza como agentes humanos para proclamar el mensaje de la vida eterna, ¡así que pongámonos manos a la obra!
