The Kingdom of God - Daniel 7:9-14 - September 16, 2026
The Prophet Daniel, still living under the reign of King Belshazzar of Babylon, received divine visions of what was to come through his dreams. Daniel speaks of his mental and bodily reactions to these visions, saying that he was incredibly anxious and disturbed, with his color having changed.
One night, Daniel dreams again. After the prior establishment of the four beasts, Daniel saw a vision of the living God, the Ancient of Days, take His seat on the throne.
Daniel offers an ethereal and mysterious image of God, describing His appearance. His clothing was white as snow, His hair like pure wool, His throne producing fiery flames.
Daniel also vaguely described other thrones being established in his vision (no specific number). What's interesting is that John described 24 Elders seated on thrones in Heaven beside the Father in Revelation 4:4. Daniel's lack of specifics about the other thrones or Elders may be because the mystery of the Church of Christ was not yet revealed to Old Testament prophets.
Daniel also describes thousands upon thousands of angels or heavenly beings standing before and serving the living God, with ten thousand times ten thousand standing before God, awaiting judgment.
Daniel's attention is then drawn to the sound of the great words (other translations say "pompous words") that were being spoken by a horn of the fourth aforementioned "beast." The beast was then killed, with its body destroyed and burned with fire. Various interpretations exist of this fourth beast, most common being the Roman Republic/Empire, or the final human dictatorship and ensuing Anti-Christ.
At the conclusion of the destruction of the beast, Daniel's gaze is drawn to "one like a Son of Man" coming with the clouds of Heaven. This figure is presented before the Ancient of Days. Given to the Son of Man was dominion and a kingdom. All peoples, nations, and languages would serve Him. A dominion that is said never to pass away.
This could arguably be one of the clearest Old Testament descriptions of the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ. Furthermore, it not only describes Him but also tells us exactly what His purpose and authority are.
Although Daniel experienced great anxiety and concern about these visions, he gradually came to understand them as pointing to a coming salvation and an everlasting kingdom.
