The Kingdom of God - Luke 1:26-33 - September 17, 2026
Today we'll continue looking at God's Kingdom through a passage from the first chapter of Luke. I’ve said it before, but I think most people eventually choose a gospel account they prefer or gravitate toward, and for me, that’s Luke. Although we are only looking at a few verses today, 26-33, they are few but mighty!
God is a God of order and structure, and his Kingdom is a reflection of that. It’s not a world of chaos, randomness, and happenstance as we might be led to believe today, but a carefully planned and designed Kingdom where everything has an intended purpose. Through God's word, the Bible, we get a firsthand view of how everything God does is a part of his great plan for his Kingdom.
Many people will be familiar with today’s passage, which recounts Mary’s first experience with the angel of the Lord, who comes to tell Mary Gods amazing plan for her. I want to step away from the “plot” of this story and look at some of the details, because I think that’s where God's most beautiful handiwork can be found. Verse 27 tells us that Joseph, who would become Jesus’ earthly father, was of the line of David, fulfilling the prophecy found in several places in the Old Testament.
Verses 26-31 answer a promise God made through Isaiah hundreds of years earlier. Isiah 7:14 states, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
There are over 1000 prophecies in the Old Testament, and each one will eventually come to fruition in the full Kingdom of God. We have the privilege of seeing some of them when we read our Bibles, and because we know that God's word is truth, we can also look forward to how amazing His Kingdom will be when His plans have truly been realized.
Father God, thank you so much for your word and the special pleasure it is for us to not only have promises directly from you, but also to see how those promises have been, are being, and will be fulfilled in your Kingdom. Help us resist the world's temptations, believe only in your truth, and remember that we are wanderers in the world but citizens of your Kingdom. Amen.
