The Kingdom of God - Matthew 3:1-17 - September 18, 2026
I lived with a brood of vipers. This summer I found four giant rattlesnakes in a drainage pipe at home after one of the miscreants killed a grazing sheep that wandered too close. Without antivenom treatment, rattlesnake venom hinders coagulation and will eventually so damage the red blood cells that the individual will become anemic and bleed out. This damaging property of the venom strongly mirrors the kingdom of the “prince of the power of the air”- led by Satan our enemy who comes “only to steal and kill and destroy”(John 10:10). The Pharisees and Sadducees called out by John as a brood of vipers had (at least somewhat) given in to the lies of the world and its prince of the air, seeking their own power through extrabiblical traditions, aligning with the Romans in power, and other aristocratic influences.
John the Baptist should have been recognized by the Jews as the “Elijah” foretold who would fulfill Isaiah’s prophesy as the “one crying in the wilderness”. John points to Jesus’ authority as the long-awaited Messiah- even while John was still in his mother’s womb-! (John 1) John not only sounds the alert that the Messiah is here, but also prepares way for the Kingdom of Heaven by warning Jesus will be winnowing out all who do not turn to Him for repentance. The world only offers false security, Jesus the only true security in His eternal kingdom. “I came that [my followers] may have life and have it abundantly”, Jesus in the rest of John 10:10.
John hesitates to baptize Jesus, the One whom John feels he is not even worthy to untie the sandals from. I love that Jesus reassures John and points to acting righteously by this act of baptism. Even though Jesus did not need to be cleansed, symbolically or spiritually, He chooses to honor His Father, confirm John’s ministry, and lead the way for His followers as our Great High Priest. What a sight after Jesus’ baptism of the Spirit descending like a dove and hearing God say, “this is my beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased”! May we all long to please God and live for the day when we are citizens only of the Kingdom of Heaven!
Discussion Questions:
1.What are the hallmarks of the kingdom of the prince of the powers of the air?
2.How does this contrast to the Kingdom of Heaven led by Jesus?
3.What ways are you living to honor God? Are there areas you have fallen in to believing the lies of the world?
