The Kingdom of God - Matthew 4:12-25 - September 19, 2026

I love how Jesus used parables to help us grasp what the Kingdom of God is like and what it will become. Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown, it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” In this small seed, Jesus gives us a powerful picture: God can take what seems small and make it something greater!

This month, as we dive deeper into the Kingdom of God, I invite you to think about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. In Matthew 4:12–17, Jesus leaves Nazareth and goes to Capernaum, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy and bringing light to those living in darkness. There he begins to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Brothers and sisters, Jesus has entrusted us with the responsibility of continuing that mission: sharing the gospel, carrying his light into dark places, and helping the Kingdom of God take root in the lives of those around us.

The mustard seed reminds us that the Kingdom of God grows through faithful acts that may appear small: living righteously, serving others, praying, studying scripture, and sharing the gospel. Matthew 4:18–22 also shows us the urgency of this calling. When Jesus called his disciples, they immediately left what they were doing and followed him. This month, I encourage you to make the Kingdom of God a top priority and prayerfully consider how your talents and abilities can contribute to its growth. Your contribution may seem small, but, like the mustard seed, God can cause it to grow into something far greater than you imagined.

Take a moment to reflect: What gift, opportunity, or relationship has God already placed in your hands? Where might he be asking you to plant a small seed of faith through an act of service, a word of encouragement, an invitation, or a conversation about the gospel? Ask God to show you one faithful step you can take this month and trust him with the growth.

My dearest brothers and sisters, Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Let us not miss the opportunity he has given us to share this good news with those around us. Through Christ, God has invited us into his mighty, glorious, and powerful Kingdom—and he calls us to invite others in. May we each plant one seed of faith this month, trusting God to bring the growth.
