The Kingdom of God - Matthew 28:16-20 - September 24, 2026
Matthew 28:16-20 - “Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
From the beginning, God has been building His glorious kingdom, a kingdom that includes both heaven and earth over which Jesus has been given all authority. What better way to fill a kingdom than to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19)? Known as the “Great Commission”, Jesus’ final earthly instructions give us a clear command to go out into the world and invite people to know Jesus and be a part of God’s kingdom - a foreshadowing of the end of a broken world and the beginning of a new creation. We are given a mission, should we choose to accept it. Jesus essentially tells us we are ready to continue the work He was doing, while assuring us we needn’t fear, because “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). We will be equipped. Frankly, that gives me chills.
There have been many times in my life when I have witnessed people doing evil, and I wish I could say my first instinct was to share Christ with them, but unfortunately, it wasn’t. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I have a feeling I’m not the only one who has ever felt that way! (We can be grateful that Jesus died for our sins, and that he continues to work in us!) As I have read and re–read these verses, I have been blessed with a new perspective. Imagine that you have knowledge and information that could save a person’s life, if only you chose to share it. Would you keep it to yourself? Or would you be a first responder for people’s eternal souls? Like the thief on the cross, all can be redeemed, and this hope is available to all. It isn’t always easy to live up to the mission we’ve been given, but I am grateful that God changes hearts and equips us.
If you have accepted Christ and believe that He died for your sins, you have received the gift of being part of the kingdom God is building. You already have a glimpse of what eternity has in store for you - what a blessing. It is, therefore, our mission - not just an opportunity, but an obligation - to go out and share the good news.
