The Gospel of Luke - Luke 22:1-38 - September 26, 2025

Luke 22:15 - And he said to them, ‘I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.’

 In 2004, Mel Gibson wrote and directed perhaps the most popular Christian movie to ever be produced.  He called it The Passion of the Christ.  When I first watched the movie, I had not heard the term “passion” used in connection with what Jesus did in His final week on earth.  However, as I’ve continued to read and reflect on Scripture, I’ve come to realize that “passion” is one of the best words to describe how Jesus acted in His final moments.  He was driven by a passionate love for His people to the point of willingly suffering and being nailed to a cross.  He did this because He knew the result would be eternal joy with the children of God.  

 As we begin to read about Jesus’s final hours, we see Him institute the Lord’s Supper in Luke 22.  It is a familiar passage to most of us, in which Jesus takes the bread and the cup which represented His body which was broken and blood that was spilt to usher in the New Covenant.  It is important for us to remember that the “New Covenant” was God’s plan of redeeming people and filling them with the Holy Spirit.  This was prophesied by the likes of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and looked forward to a time where God would dwell in His people, causing them to walk in His ways.  The New Covenant would be characterized by the grace of God in forgiving and transforming sinners.  This is what Jesus’s suffering and death accomplished for us.

 However, what struck me most when re-reading this passage was verse 15.  Jesus, before instituting the Lord’s Supper, makes the comment that He has “earnestly desired” to eat this Passover meal with the disciples.  Here, we see His passion for His people.  He knows the importance of what is about to take place.  He is overwhelmed by the magnitude of emotion that is present.  He shows a genuine love and care for the disciples as He speaks clearly and compassionately to them during this meal.  He also makes the promise in verse sixteen that He will eat the meal again when it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.  What a beautiful thing we have to look forward to!

 Here’s the point: Jesus passionately loves you.  He earnestly desires to save you.  He is driven by God-honoring emotion for your good.  This truth is meant to draw us near to Him, help us to trust Him, and allow His love to become our own.

 Things we should take away from this passage:

 1 - Jesus passionately and sacrificially loves me.

2 - Jesus is looking forward to the fulfillment of the Kingdom and sharing a meal with me. 

3 - Jesus has ushered in the New Covenant of grace that I may be filled and led by the Holy Spirit.

 Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son.  You sent Jesus to bear the weight of our sin and guilt.  We thank you for the fact that He has ushered in our salvation, and we hasten the day where we will eat with you in heaven.  Amen.

 Lucas 22:15 - Y les dijo: «He deseado ardientemente comer esta Pascua con vosotros antes de padecer».

 En 2004, Mel Gibson escribió y dirigió la que quizá sea la película cristiana más popular jamás producida. La tituló La pasión de Cristo. Cuando vi la película por primera vez, no había oído utilizar el término «pasión» en relación con lo que Jesús hizo en su última semana en la tierra.  Sin embargo, al seguir leyendo y reflexionando sobre las Escrituras, me di cuenta de que «pasión» es una de las mejores palabras para describir cómo actuó Jesús en sus últimos momentos. Estaba impulsado por un amor apasionado por su pueblo, hasta el punto de sufrir voluntariamente y ser clavado en una cruz. Lo hizo porque sabía que el resultado sería la alegría eterna con los hijos de Dios.

 Al comenzar a leer sobre las últimas horas de Jesús, vemos cómo instituye la Cena del Señor en Lucas 22. Es un pasaje familiar para la mayoría de nosotros, en el que Jesús toma el pan y la copa que representaban su cuerpo que fue quebrantado y su sangre que fue derramada para dar paso al Nuevo Pacto.  Es importante que recordemos que el «Nuevo Pacto» era el plan de Dios para redimir a las personas y llenarlas del Espíritu Santo. Esto fue profetizado por Jeremías y Ezequiel, entre otros, y anticipaba un tiempo en el que Dios moraría en su pueblo, haciéndoles caminar en sus caminos. El Nuevo Pacto se caracterizaría por la gracia de Dios al perdonar y transformar a los pecadores.  Esto es lo que el sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús lograron para nosotros.

Sin embargo, lo que más me impactó al releer este pasaje fue el versículo 15.  Jesús, antes de instituir la Cena del Señor, comenta que ha «deseado ardientemente» comer esta cena de Pascua con los discípulos.  Aquí vemos su pasión por su pueblo.  Él sabe la importancia de lo que está a punto de suceder.  Está abrumado por la magnitud de la emoción que se vive. Muestra un amor y un cuidado genuinos por los discípulos al hablarles con claridad y compasión durante esta cena. También hace la promesa en el versículo dieciséis de que volverá a comer la cena cuando se cumpla en el Reino de Dios. ¡Qué cosa tan hermosa tenemos por delante!

  La cuestión es esta: Jesús te ama apasionadamente. Desea ardientemente salvarte.  Él está impulsado por un sentimiento que honra a Dios por tu bien. Esta verdad tiene como objetivo acercarnos a Él, ayudarnos a confiar en Él y permitir que Su amor se convierta en el nuestro.

 Lo que debemos aprender de este pasaje:

 1 - Jesús me ama apasionadamente y con sacrificio.

2 - Jesús espera con ansias el cumplimiento del Reino y compartir una comida conmigo.

3 - Jesús ha introducido el Nuevo Pacto de gracia para que yo pueda ser lleno y guiado por el Espíritu Santo.

 Padre, te damos gracias por el regalo de tu Hijo.  Tú enviaste a Jesús para llevar el peso de nuestro pecado y nuestra culpa.  Te damos gracias por el hecho de que Él ha introducido nuestra salvac
