The Kingdom of God - Acts 2:22-36 - September 26, 2026

Rejoining the 3000

The verses we're considering today have important bookends that I want to call out.  We're pretty sure that a chaotic scene happened only 10 days after Jesus' ascension during the celebration of Pentecost, with about 120 of his followers in a large room close to the temple, with some access to a larger patio that became an accidental auditorium accommodating more than 3000 pilgrims, dispersed Jews from all over the Greek empire.

We're not given the exact details of where or how. Still, many of these pilgrims somehow overheard the 120 followers speaking in tongues – proclaiming the mighty works of God - impossibly in their native languages!

Some wise guy in the crowd was quoted, loudly claiming that these fishermen and women were drunk, which oddly didn't resolve the chaos. He was quickly smacked down by one of them, Peter, who stepped up to address the 3,000+ pilgrims and gave one of the most powerful and celebrated gospel sermons ever, giving me the first bookend for this devotion.

†   14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose …

And thus, Peter had their full attention and found himself so full of the Holy Spirit that he spontaneously delivered a powerful gospel sermon. Can you imagine being Peter – suddenly (and finally) understanding so much of what Jesus had been trying to teach him and the other followers? His fear of the audience was gone. His memory of what Jesus said and did, and how Jesus' actions translated to a completion stamp being applied to everyone's Jewish faith – releasing them from the heavy Mosaic law - if only they would accept God's offer of a much easier way to be part of the Invocation of the modern Kingdom of God.

Our Scripture passage for today was lengthy before I added bookends, so I'm trusting you'll visit the link at the beginning of this devotion to read it and take the time to review it. You'll recognize most of his main points, but Peter says them so well that it merits rereading often.

My closing bookend has two parts.

†   37 Now when they heard this (Peter's sermon) they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts records a couple of other meaty facts before continuing how this scene played out.

†   41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Question: Was Peter's message- the first hugely successful revival meeting yielding a serendipitous 3000 new Christians- an unplanned, accidental sermon?

No – I don't believe it either. Despite what might look like random placement of the 120 where they could be overheard and the gifts of the Holy Spirit being depicted with so many different languages spoken by so many who likely didn't understand what words were coming out of their mouths. So many pilgrims being convinced that they answered an unplanned altar call -  no, this all quietly screams how God carefully orchestrated both the 120 and 3000 and put it in Luke's mind to record the event.

This gives us the main point for this devotion – the impact on everyone.

Peter: while the priests were still trying to figure out how to fix that torn veil in the temple (wouldn't you love to have watched that scramble?) - only a few blocks away, the 120 were celebrating having been so close to such a great act of God – except for Peter. He was likely still wondering what just happened. This idea of speaking for God had to be scary-new to him, and now he was needed to help the 120.

The 120 – they just inherited a whole congregation. If you do the math, 3000 / 120 = roughly 25 new believers for each of the 120 to somehow wrangle into small groups and mentor everyone into this new Kingdom of God lifestyle without any tracts to hand out.

Those 3000 were the inauguration of the Kingdom of God 2.0. They all needed something to tell their friends and families back home. "You're not going to believe what happened at Pentecost…"

… and us – right now. Did you have any form of a Pentecost or revival event that brought you into the kingdom? Was it anything like those 3000?  Do you recall how anxious you were to follow Jesus and be his disciple? Do you miss that burning in your heart to be Christ's instrument of loving and saving others?

Yea… Me too.

Okay then.

Let's rejoin the original 3000 in pursuing the kingdom of God –

… together.

… juntos.
