The Kingdom of God - Colossians 1:9-20 - September 28, 2026

Colossians 1:13-14 - “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

I have only moved homes a couple of times in my life.  I moved to a house in Guerneville when I was a baby and lived there for about 6 years.  After my mom remarried my stepdad, we moved to a house on Blank Rd, where I lived for most of my life, up until I got married myself.  In April of 2024, I moved into the apartment in Bennett Valley where I currently reside.  Despite my relative lack of experience moving, I know that it is very difficult.  It actually ranks as one of the most stressful life events next to getting married, having a child, or changing jobs.  But what if the place you were moving into was infinitely better than the place you were leaving?

This sort of “move” is what takes place for us when we are born again.  At the moment of our salvation, we are transferred from the domain of darkness (imagine living in the middle of Nevada) to the kingdom of God (imagine living at the best tropical resort you can think of).  In all seriousness, this transfer is life-changing.  The Bible teaches that we are all born into this “domain of darkness” living as “children of wrath” who are separated from God.  Because of our sinful natures, there is nothing that we can do to “move” ourselves into God’s kingdom.  That’s what makes the transfer so amazing - God is the one who accomplished it for us.

The work of Jesus Christ - His sinless life, suffering and death, resurrection on the third day, and ascension into heaven - has operated as the mode of our transfer.  We didn’t have to order a U-Haul, pack up and label a million boxes, figure out how to lift a mattress the most efficiently.  No, Jesus did it all.  The only reason we can say that we live presently in God’s kingdom is because of God and His grace.  Praise the Lord!

This morning, take a moment to reflect on the “move” that God has worked in your life.  Think back to the time before you knew Jesus.  Whether or not this was a short or long period of time, the truth was, all of us were there - ready to face God’s wrath.  Think back to when you began your relationship with Jesus and embraced the Gospel of your salvation.  And think about where God has brought you already… and where you’re ultimately going in eternity.

I’ll close with Psalm 23:6 - “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
