The Kingdom of God - Psalm 2 - September 9, 2026
Psalm 2:1 asks a question. “WHY do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?” Absolutely just as true today as when it was written. Those who do not belong to God fight “against the Lord and against His anointed One”, (v2). Almighty God scorns them as fools. He holds them in contempt and rebukes them in His wrath. He blows them away with His fierce displeasure. God’s response: “Who do you think you are? I have installed MY King in Zion”, (v4-6). All the nations of the earth will one day belong to Christ, (v7-9). The remainder of the Psalm warns us all to “be wise, be warned… serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling… worship the Son … Blessed are all who take refuge in Him”.
When it looks like the world in going to hell in a handbasket, it is imperative to remember Who is in control! Sometimes it is difficult to see God’s hand of control over events like wars, the rise of crime all around us, our own families and lives struck with difficulty, sin and sadness. In this Psalm we are warned to “serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling”. Yes, He is worthy of fear! No matter how it looks to us today, He is firmly in control of events on this planet and in every life! He is that sovereign!! While we serve Him with fear, aware of His power and control, we are also to “rejoice with trembling” and “kiss the Son”.
Because we do not see the future, things can look bleak to us. God knows we tremble with uncertainty about world events while, at the same time, we rejoice in Him, trusting the One Who not only knows the future; He controls it. It is our deep privilege to love (kiss) the Lord Jesus, right in the midst of our unknowing.
“I don’t know about tomorrow, I just live from day to day. I don’t borrow from its sunshine, for its skies may turn to gray. I don’t worry o’er the future, for I know what Jesus said. And today I’ll walk beside Him, For He knows what is ahead. Many things about tomorrow I don’t seem to understand; but I know Who holds tomorrow, and I know He holds my hand.” -Albert B. Smith
There is deep peace available to us when we trustingly walk into the future holding the hand of the One Who created us and controls the world and everything in it.
