1. When you think of "humility," what person in your life comes to mind? Has there been a time or experience that has stood out in your mind exemplifying what true humility looks like?
2. What makes serving others challenging? What are the sort of barriers that are common in your life (busyness, selfishness, etc.)?

1. Read Philippians 2:5. What does it mean to have the "mind" of Christ? Why does Paul start here before talking about our actions?
2. Read Philippians 2:6-7. What does it mean that Jesus "emptied Himself?" What is the difference between serving out of humility and serving hoping for recognition?
3. Read Philippians 2:8. What does Jesus' obedience teach us about true humility? What does this passage teach us about the relationship between humility and sacrifice?
Life Application Questions
1. What is one privilege, strength, or advantage that God has blessed you with that you could use more to serve others? Make a plan to do something this week.
2. Philippians has been teaching us that defiant joy comes in unexpected ways - including humbly serving others. Brainstorm ways that you can build up Hessel Church through sacrificial service.
